Duties

Help
  • Perform required maintenance and repair of firing ranges. Typical tasks include painting, cutting grass, repairing/patching target and railroad ties, mixing concrete, cutting wooden targets from templates, etc.
  • Operate a computer keyboard console to activate target mechanisms.
  • Utilize multi-meters and other electronics testing tools to service and perform minor electronic test and repairs.
  • Perform required maintenance/adjustments (i.e., organizational field maintenance) for various electromechanical target devices such as target holding mechanisms, tank gunnery and hostile fire simulator, etc.
  • Perform operational checks on equipment to identify worn or damaged parts and/or make makes necessary adjustments
  • Operate various motor vehicles up to 26,000 pounds to facilitate work.

  • This position has a heavy lifting requirement up to 75 pounds.
  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position is a Testing Designated Position (TDP) subject to applicant testing and random drug testing. Tentatively selected applicants will be required to sign DA Form 5019 requiring participation in random drug urinalysis testing.
  • Successful completion of a pre-placement physical examination is required.
  • This position requires shift work to provide coverage on evenings, weekends, holidays, or special situations. Employee shifts are rotated on a regularly scheduled basis.
  • This position is subject to an irregular tour of duty to cover 24 hour-a-day, 7-days-a-week range operation.
  • Incumbent must obtain and maintain a valid state driver's license.
  • Incumbent must obtain and maintain a valid military driver's license.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of an Target Systems Worker without more than normal supervision. Such work includes a demonstrated experience facility maintenance tasks such as painting, patching concrete, using power tools to cut lumber and conduct preventative maintenance on equipment such as checking fluids, adjusting brakes, tightening fitting, and changing batteries. - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

  • PHYSICAL EFFORT: Requires frequent lifting, positioning and carrying of target mechanism, tools and equipment weighing up to 75 pounds. Items weighing in excess of 75 pounds normally involve more than one person. Work requires frequent bending, stooping, walking, standing, working in cramped positions and climbing up and down a steep flight of stairs to reach a 30-foot control tower. Requires prolonged standing on concrete floors and walking over rough and uneven terrain.
  • WORKING CONDITIONS: Works inside and outside during all types of weather conditions. Stands on concrete floors and works on ranges in rough terrain. Exposed to dangers of live fire ranges, pyrotechnics, laser frequencies, and explosives. May be exposed to sulfuric acid when handling batteries used in operating remotely controlled target devices. Is exposed to the possibility of abrasions, cuts, burns, electrical shock, falls from a 30-foot tower and explosions. Hearing protective devices, hard hats with face shield and other safety equipment and devices are issued or available for use. The official duty station of this position is the assigned Remote Electronic Target Systems (RETS) Range which may be up to 30 miles, one way, from Range Control, Bldg. 2740.
