Summary

The Mission Assurance Branch (MAB) is seeking an individual to develop and execute a quality engineering function on Langley Research Center's (LaRC's) spaceflight and technology demonstration flight projects to achieve the overall mission objectives. This is accomplished through quality engineering principles coupled with knowledge of spaceflight requirements. This work spans supplier assessments, procurements, and control of product through fabrication, assembly and testing up to launch.

Duties

Help
  • Establish, maintain, and evaluate quality assurance processes and procedures for use through all phases of the development of aerospace systems, spacecraft, payloads, and associated ground support equipment from design through operational use.
  • Develop and implement technical concepts and procedures required to ensure space systems, and all their elements, will perform satisfactorily in space flight operations.
  • Develop, oversee and manage quality assurance operations where experimental work is conducted or the complete space systems are assembled, checked out, launched, and operated.
  • Provide technical direction of contractors' quality assurance efforts where industry and Government know-how and experience are partnered.
  • Develop procedures for quality assurance programs and inspection systems for all phases of space systems hardware development.
  • Work closely with program and project managers, quality assurance inspectors and design, development, fabrication, and process engineers to provide direction and advice to insure an optimum quality assurance program.
  • Establish the criteria for a satisfactory quality assurance program for contract specifications and participate in contract reviews and negotiations to ensure NASA and industry quality assurance standards are met.
  • Monitor contractors' quality assurance programs including procurements, receiving, inspecting, selecting and processing materials, fabricating, assembling, and testing.
  • Duties described above are at the full-performance level. Duties assigned at a lower grade level will be of more limited scope, performed with less independence and limited complexity; duties will be commensurate with the grade of selected employee.

Qualifications

In addition to the Basic Education requirement, you must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade, which has equipped you with the particular competencies needed to successfully perform the duties of the position described above.

To qualify for the GS-13: Specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade (GS-12) is experience such as: Developing and implementing quality requirements for fabrication, assembly, and testing of aerospace systems for flight projects; implementing a quality program for hardware from concept and fabrication assembly through acceptance testing; and assessing and executing quality processes and procedures.

To qualify for the GS-14: Specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade (GS-13) is experience such as: Developing and implementing quality requirements for fabrication, assembly, and testing of aerospace systems for flight projects; overseeing and managing a quality program for hardware from concept and fabrication assembly through acceptance testing; Planning, assessing and executing quality processes and procedures; and developing quality processes and procedures to be used for the formulation of a quality management system for organizations.

Basic Education Requirement: A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major study in Aeronautical Engineering, Aeronautics, Aerospace Engineering, Architecture, Astronautical Engineering, Astronautics, Astronomy, Astrophysics, Biomedical Engineering, Ceramic Engineering, Ceramics, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Civil Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science*, Life Science, Earth and Planetary Science, Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Geology, Geophysics, Industrial Engineering, Materials Engineering, Materials Science, Mathematics (Pure or Applied), Applied Mechanics, Engineering Mechanics, Mechanical Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, Metallurgy, Meteorology, Nuclear Engineering, Nuclear Engineering Physics, Oceanography, Optical Engineering, Physics, Applied Physics, Engineering Physics, Space Science, Structural Engineering, Welding Engineering or other appropriate physical science or engineering field.

Degrees in engineering technology are not considered to be qualifying for this position.

*Note: Curriculum must include 30 semester hours of course work in a combination of mathematics, statistics and computer science that provided in-depth knowledge of the following: (1) theoretical foundations and practical applications of computer science, including digital computer system architecture and system software organization, the representation and transformation of information structures and the theoretical models for such representations and transformations; and (2) essential mathematical and statistical techniques. Of the 30 semester hours, 15 must be in any combination of statistics and mathematics which includes differential and integral calculus.
