NSF Program Directors have an unparalleled opportunity and responsibility to ensure NSF-funded research is at the forefront of advancing fundamental knowledge. In support of that, Program Directors are responsible for extensive interactions with academic research communities and industry, as well as interactions with other Federal agencies that may lead to development of interagency collaborations. They are also responsible for service to Foundation-wide activities and initiatives to accomplish NSF’s strategic goals to:

  1. Transform the Frontiers of Science and Engineering,
  2. Stimulate Innovation and Address Societal Needs through Research and Education, and
  3. Excel as a Federal Science Agency.

Qualifications

Candidates must have a Ph.D. in the discipline of engineering plus after award of the Ph.D., six or more years of successful research, research administration, and/or managerial experience pertinent to the position.

In addition, familiarity with NSF programs and activities, as well as experience with the management of multiple investigator projects and center-level research efforts are highly desirable. The incumbent is expected to function effectively both as individual within the ERC program and as a member of highly collaborative crosscutting teams.

This position is outside the competitive civil service.

  1. In-depth knowledge and expertise in specialty areas of engineering and/or science and familiarity with the engineering and/or science research community.
  2. Knowledge of the principles, concepts, methods, and techniques of basic science, engineering research, and science policy to analyze research efforts, as well as demonstrated experience in working on large-scale, collaborative projects across multiple institutions.
  3. Knowledge of the administrative/operational aspects of Federal funding mechanisms such as grants, contracts, cooperative agreements, and other contractual arrangements to perform assigned functions.
  4. Ability to compile, evaluate and present technical and scientific information.
  5. Knowledge of the collection, arrangement, and organization of data to prepare tables, charts, graphs, summaries, and other materials for effective presentation of research results and for inclusion in publications.
  6. Knowledge of computer systems, methods and applications.
