Summary

This position is located in United States Department of Agriculture, Agricultural Research Services, Arthropod-borne Animal Diseases Research Unit (ABADRU) located in Manhattan, KS.

Duties

Help
  • Contribute ideas towards the planning and sequencing of the technical aspects of animal or infectious disease research.
  • Interpret and document findings by preparing information to be included in manuscripts or preparing reports summarizing progress or results of research.
  • Independently develop or design various aspects of research projects on the basis of overall objectives outlined by the supervisor.
  • Maintain and calibrate complex/specialized equipment and automated systems used for test and evaluation procedures in support of animal or infectious disease research.
  • Perform techniques to obtain, analyze and summarize data/samples related to animal or infectious disease research, including: real-time PCR, plaque assays, PRNT assays, ELISAs, fluorescence microscopy, sterile cell culture, and flow cytometry.
  • Keep exact, detailed records of experimental data. Tabulate, statistically analyze, and summarize data using personal computers and software packages.

At the GS-7:
Specialized Experience: Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. Specialized experience must be described for each grade level advertised. The specialized experience requirements for this position are: Qualifying experience for GS-07 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-06 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience assisting in infectious disease or animal health studies; collecting animal or microbial samples; compiling and keeping records of scientific data related to infectious diseases or animal health; and assisting with operating or maintaining standard laboratory equipment in support of biological or clinical laboratory studies.
OR
Education: One full year of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's or equivalent graduate degree, if directly related. Related degrees may include Biology, Animal Science and Microbiology.
OR
A combination of graduate level education and experience as described above.

At the GS-8:
Specialized Experience: Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. Specialized experience must be described for each grade level advertised. The specialized experience requirements for this position are: Qualifying experience for GS-08 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-07 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience participating in infectious disease or animal health studies; recording and analyzing scientific data related to infectious disease or animal health studies; operating or maintaining standard laboratory equipment in support of biological or clinical laboratory studies, and assisting with the development or improvement of techniques and procedures within the experiment process.
OR
Education: Two full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's or equivalent graduate degree, if directly related. Related degrees may include Biology, Animal Science and Microbiology.
OR
A combination of graduate level education and experience as described above.

At the GS-9:
Specialized Experience: Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. Specialized experience must be described for each grade level advertised. The specialized experience requirements for this position are: Qualifying experience for GS-09 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-08 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience conducting an experiment or research project related to infectious disease or animal health; collecting and evaluating samples related to infectious disease or animal health; preparing scientific information to be included in manuscripts or preparing reports; operating and maintaining standard laboratory equipment in support of biological or clinical laboratory studies; and participating in the development or improvement of techniques and procedures within the experiment process.
OR
Education: Two full years of graduate level education or a Master's degree, if directly related to the position. Related degrees may include Biology, Animal Science and Microbiology.
OR
A combination of graduate level education and specialized experience as described above.

Work Environment:
This work involves regular and recurring moderate risks or discomforts which require special safety precautions, e.g. working with contagious diseases or irritant chemicals. The employee will be required to use protective clothing such as gowns, coats, boots, goggles, gloves, and respirators.
