NASA is looking for an experienced historical researcher to support the Office of Communications at NASA's Ames Research Center located in California's Silicon Valley. As the subject matter expert on all history and heritage matters of the center, you will research, evaluate, document, and preserve the institutional memory of the agency, identify gaps in historical documentation, and aggressively seek out needed information that is important to the agency's history.
Summary
NASA is looking for an experienced historical researcher to support the Office of Communications at NASA's Ames Research Center located in California's Silicon Valley. As the subject matter expert on all history and heritage matters of the center, you will research, evaluate, document, and preserve the institutional memory of the agency, identify gaps in historical documentation, and aggressively seek out needed information that is important to the agency's history.
Administer and manage the center's History Office and history program. Advise NASA management officials on methods for applying communications strategies to achieve programmatic goals.
Develop and implement long-range plans for historical support to the center and agency and ensure the documentation of the activities. Research and prepare scholarly narratives or documentary histories for publication.
Plan and conduct independent research studies; Obtain pertinent data from all available sources and integrate supporting documentation into a meaningful whole; secure information and documentation by maintaining cross-center working relationships.
Conduct intensive study and critical analysis of source material. Determine accuracy, authenticity, and value of material. Apply specialized knowledge of historiographic research methods. Prepare documents to accompany historical narrative.
Plan and conduct special or continuing or long-range historical studies relating to current affairs for use by agency officials in evaluating policies and programs, and to record the policies, programs, and operations of the center and agency.
Respond to requests for information. Research and answer inquiries for historical information for the center, agency, and public. Quickly and accurately synthesize information from sources to express conclusions in a format appropriate to audience.

This appointment may be extended beyond the initial appointment date, for a period not to exceed a total of six years.

Qualifications
In addition to the Basic Requirements, applicant must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade, which has equipped the applicant with the particular competencies needed to successfully perform the duties of the position described above.
To qualify for GS-12:
Specialized experience is described as researching historical methodology, performing and scholarly writing and/or editing in the fields of history, history of science or science studies; Developing historical studies and conducting research of history; Developing written historical materials for professional publication

Basic Requirements: A. Degree in history or related field that included at least 18 semester hours in history; OR B. A combination of education and experience with courses equivalent to a major in history, or a major in a related field that included at least 18 semester hours in history, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
Preference will be given to applicants with graduate study in the social sciences or humanities when such study included training in historical research methodology; or the applicant's thesis approached the subject from an historical viewpoint and used professional historical research methodology and techniques in its preparation.
