Hospitalist:The Hospitalist is accountable to the Associate Chief of Staff for Acute Care & Specialties and the Chief of Staff. The physician-hospitalist is an independent care provider who is highly skilled in the management of patient's acute care needs and coordinates subspecialty evaluation and treatment. The provider has responsibilities for the evaluation, care, and disposition of patients, ordering appropriate diagnostic tests, determining need for hospitalization or transferring the patient to another facility. Must be board certified or board eligible in Internal Medicine, and experienced at management of medical conditions requiring hospitalization, and interested in engaging in ongoing process improvement with respect to measures of quality care, patient safety, patient satisfaction, patient and family education, utilization management, cost control. The Hospitalist provides teaching experiences for students and residents. Provider Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) required.

Emergency Medicine: The Physician is accountable to the Associate Chief of Staff for Acute Care & Specialties and the Chief of Staff. He/She must be proficient in emergency medical situations, experience in the operation and administration of the Emergency Department and committed to public service. Duties include, but are not limited to: patient assessment and treatment/management of urgent/emergent conditions, acute conditions, exacerbation of chronic conditions, vesting of new veterans, admission and/or transfer of urgent/emergent veterans, providing medical clearance for veterans requiring admission to inpatient Mental Health, and for providing care to CAVHCS staff who becomes ill or injured while on duty in the absence of the Occupational Health Certified Registered Nurse Practitioner. Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) required.

Primary Care: The Physician works as a member of a multi-disciplinary health care team, collaborating with other members of the team to provide Primary Care to Veterans enrolled on the team. The physician is expected to demonstrate advanced competencies and skills in assessing the physical and psychosocial status of patients and family members, play an active role in the multi-disciplinary health care team.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements:

  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
  • Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
  • Completion of residency training, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.
  • Physical requirements outlined below.

Physical Requirements: Walking, bending, stooping, and some lifting in the direct care of patients. There may also be extended periods of sitting.

Annual leave shall accrue for full-time physicians at the rate of eight (8) hours per biweekly pay period.
