Duties

Help
  • Selects and installs cables, ropes, chains, and other weight handling gear; assembles, repairs, and installs standing and running rigging; and inspects, packs, and secures cargo parachutes.
  • Operates motor vehicles, material handling equipment, forklifts, and/or cargo loaders.
  • Performs daily aerial delivery rigging operations and parachute rigger support.
  • Provides Inventory Management and Government Purchase Card (GPC) support for production and repair of aerial delivery equipment and related air transportation functions.
  • Utilizes safety practices and procedures following established safety rules and regulations and maintain a safe work environment.

  • Work requires the employee to operate a motor vehicle. An appropriate and valid driver?s license is required for the position.
  • This is a drug testing designated position. The incumbent is subject to pre-employment drug testing as a condition of employment, and participation in random drug testing.
  • Must be a certified graduate of U.S. Army Quartermaster Parachute Rigger Course (Phase 1), L9AZA2T251-00AA. The employee must attend the agency Parachute Rigger Course
  • within 6 months of appointment unless employee has previously completed the course.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the quality level of experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards Handbook X-118C.

QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C for the WG-5200 Miscellaneous Occupations Group. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most blue-collar positions, you must meet any screen-out element listed, and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time.

The screen out element for this position is ability to do the work of a RIGGING WORKER without more than normal supervision.

Physical Effort: Grade 8 rigging workers frequently lift and carry moderately heavy objects such as cables, chains, and jacks. They continually reach, bend, stoop, push, and pull while attaching rigging to the object to be moved. They frequently use their entire body weight to push or pull suspended loads, chain falls, or load tag lines while moving objects into desired positions. They stand and walk for prolonged periods of time, and frequently climb on platforms or other structures to signal the crane operator.

Working Conditions: Grade 8 rigging workers work both indoors and outdoors in all types of weather. They are subject to possible cuts and burns while handling wire and fiber ropes. They are exposed to cuts, bruises, and broken bones from falls
while climbing and attaching rigging to the load and while signaling the crane operator from platforms or other structures.
They are frequently exposed to serious injury from swinging loads, breaking slings, and falling objects. Various protective
devices such as hard hats, safety shoes, and gloves are used to minimize these conditions.

JOB ELEMENTS: Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas:
1. Knowledge of established rigging trade practices and techniques to select and install weight-handling gear used in lifting, moving, air dropping, and positioning a variety of large and heavy objects.
2. Ability to determine and apply accepted aerial delivery load requirements using standard shop mathematics; fractions, equations, and measurements, tools and tool control procedures.
3. Ability to move light- to heavy-weight objects and the use of hand and electric tools in the build-up and breakdown of airdrop platforms.
4. Ability to interpret and communicate technical orders, regulations, manuals, catalogs, records, orders, and other published guidance; follow checklists and apply accepted safety regulations, practices, and procedures related to the occupation.
5. Ability to apply basic analytical methods and techniques to receive, screen, review, and verify supply/shipping documents and resolve discrepancies
6. Knowledge of general office/clerical procedures and data/document file maintenance

PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.

VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
