Duties

Help
  • Serves as primary contact with regard to hazardous and toxic materials and waste storage and disposal.
  • Manages/operates the Hazardous Waste Accumulation Point (HWAP) as Facility Manager.
  • Prepares, corrects, and maintains environmental protection documents/records to comply with Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), State of Arizona Department of Environmental Quality, Defense Reutilization Marketing Office (DRMO).
  • Develops and proposes revisions to policies and procedures for environmental programs at Fort Huachuca, Arizona.
  • Provides backup environmental compliance inspections at satellite accumulation point areas as required.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a valid government driver's license.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a valid government forklift license.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain current certification in the following areas: Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA), Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), and Department of Transportation (DOT).
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain certification in the introductory course in hazardous waste (HAZWOPER).
  • This position is unusual working conditions as Summer Heat and winter cold, and the potential of chemical poisoning if the wrong chemical mix.
  • This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
  • Temporary Duty Travel (TDY) may be required up to 15% of the time.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes 1.) Applying environmental laws and regulations to monitor environmental programs such as hazardous waste disposal; 2.) Gathering data from hazardous waste inspections; and 3.) Monitor and collect technical information on environmental activities such as Spill Prevention Control, Hazardous Waste Minimization, and/or Environmental Protection. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the second lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07).

Education: Master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position, such as: Environmental Science
OR
Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the first year (total graduate semester hours minus 18) by 18. Add the two percentages.
