This position is located within the Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Service at the VA Boston Healthcare System in West Roxbury, Massachusetts. Serving as a Pathology Assistant, you will provide technical and administrative assistance, oversight, and coordination of all the grossing areas, frozen section areas and autopsy suite in Anatomic Pathology Service.

Duties

Help

  • Performs initial examination and processing of pathology specimens;
  • Accessions biopsy and surgical specimens;
  • Assists with setting up for gross specimen conferences;
  • Assists pathologists, residents, and medical students in completing autopsies;
  • Supervises other qualified histology personnel in the initial examination and processing of surgical pathology specimens;
  • Trains histotechnologists and/or histotechnicians in the performance of diener duties;
  • Assures morgue and cutting room are properly supplied and maintains inventory;
  • Develops, reviews and revises procedures in anatomic pathology;
  • Ensures equipment is functioning properly;
  • Monitors environment, temperature, humidity, noise levels, etc.
  • Prepares all needed instruments, surfaces and containers for autopsies;
  • Provides oversight of quality assurance functions;
  • Participates in internal and external inspections;
  • Provides statistical reports and training; and
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Qualifications

All applicants must meet the Basic Requirement: Bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree with major study in an academic field related to the medical field, health sciences, or allied sciences appropriate to the work of the position. To be appropriate to the work of the position, the program and coursework must focus on pathology, biological sciences, histology, etc. and show the appropriate training for examining and processing surgical specimens. This degree must be from an educational program from an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained. NOTE: You must submit copies of transcripts at the time of application. Education will not be credited without documentation. Please ensure that your transcripts show that a degree was conferred. In addition to the basic requirement above, applicants must also meet one of the following:

Specialized Experience: At least one (1) full year of specialized experience that equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform the duties of this position. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the GS-9 grade level in Federal service. Specialized experience includes: Examining and processing pathology specimens including fixing, gross examination, orientation, cutting and dissecting, photographing, and sectioning of patient autopsy, biopsy and surgical specimens; assisting pathologists and residents in completing autopsies; maintaining the cutting room and morgue area; properly disposing of chemicals and biohazard materials; and managing anatomical pathology protocols. NOTE: Your experience must be fully documented in your resume and must include job title, duties, month and year start/end dates AND hours worked per week. ~OR~

Education: Successfully completed three (3) years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in a field related to the work of a Pathology Specialist - Pathology Assistant. This education must have provided the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to do the work of this position. Education must have been obtained in an accredited college, or university. NOTE: You must submit a copy of your transcript with your application. Education cannot be credited without documentation. ~OR~

Combination: A combination of related graduate level education (beyond the second year) and specialized experience as described above. Education must have been obtained in an accredited college, or university. NOTE: Your experience must be documented in your resume and transcripts are required at the time of application.

Physical Requirements: Requires long periods of standing, bending over instruments, counters and tables (cryostat, autopsy table, cutting benches), as well as, heavy lifting (bodies and supplies). The work procedure requires manual dexterity and depth perception for determining depth and angles of cuts into human tissue.The work requires regular and recurring exposure to infectious agents such as, tuberculosis, hepatitis, HIV and other agents; to body fluids and tissues; and to caustic, flammable, noxious, toxic and/or carcinogenic chemical reagents and solutions. The work includes the use of extremely sharp cutting instruments in difficult conditions with limited visibility.

Receiving Service Credit for Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. VA may offer newly-appointed Federal employee's credit for their job-related non-federal experience or active duty uniformed military service. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave. Such credit must be requested and approved prior to the appointment date and is not guaranteed.
