Summary

Lead the mission and science data integration effort for the Goddard Earth Sciences Data and Information Services Center (GES DISC). Serve as the primary interface to science teams, principal investigators, and researchers. Lead data publication efforts. Represents GES DISC's requirements as part of a significant re-architecture activity to simplify data center operational processes, improve efficiency and integrate GES DISC processes and services into the larger NASA Earth Observation System.

Duties

Help
  • Lead the design and implementation of flight mission, near-real-time, and operational model data acquisition, processing, archive, distribution, and data services. Support prototyping and migration of mission support systems to the cloud.
  • Establish service level agreements; specify data interfaces; document data holdings; and define data formats and metadata. Coordinate integration and test of science processing software into an operational science data processing system.
  • Plan and execute data support and application-specific projects to acquire, archive, and distribute global and regional Earth science data sets. Populate, curate, and publish metadata to the appropriate repositories.
  • Lead the documentation of all data holdings, data reconciliation with data providers and respond to inquiries on data content, quality and usage from the science user community. Support the evolution of the Unified Metadata Model.
  • Provision data search, access, analysis and visualization services. Provide user support. Coordinate development and maintenance of GES DISC Data Publication System and related tools. Coordinate DOI assignment activities for all GES DISC.
  • Contribute to EOSDIS standards for data publication policies and procedures for current and future earth science missions as the new mission definition and data center assignments are established.
  • Develop budget, set priorities and direct work of 20+ WYE contractors and coordinate services development and data support across GES DISC. Present information in designated forums (annual WG meetings, science team, science conferences).
  • Investigate opportunities for the use of GES DISC data management capabilities for future NASA missions and projects. Represent GES DISC requirements in the formulation of ESDIS-wide standards and practices.

Qualifications

Applicant must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-14 grade level, which has equipped the applicant with the particular competencies needed to successfully perform the duties of the position described above.

Specialized experience includes, but is not limited to leadership and coordination of teams to support data publication and science data operations; specification of data management capabilities in support of earth science missions; documentation of requirements for data publication and support for global and regional Earth science data sets; documentation of data holdings to assist end users in understanding the data set; population and curation of metadata and the associated documentation to as it relates to the deployment of end-to-end services supported through the Earth Observing System Data and Information System (EOSDIS).

Education

Candidates must have a bachelor's degree, preferably an advanced degree in engineering, physical science, or mathematics that included 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, or electronics.
