Duties

Help
  • Installs and makes major repairs and alterations to fleet electrical systems and electrical equipment.
  • Trouble-shoots circuits, switches, wiring, control equipment, electrical failures in motors, generators, panel boards and switching equipment.
  • Diagnoses trouble and repairs and installs outlets, conduit, switches, breakers, circuits, coils, commutators, brushes, engine generators, starters, ignition systems, etc.
  • Makes frequent checks of and maintains and repairs motors and generators, panel boards, refrigeration systems and ice plants, fire alarm systems, communication systems, electrical boiler controls, and other miscellaneous fleet equipment and systems.
  • Uses testing, equipment such as volt-ohm meter, ammeter, and megger for testing insulation and location of grounds.

  • This position requires the incumbent to obtain a TWIC card and a U.S. Coast Guard License as Assistant Engineer and Tankerman PIC/Barge DL within 5 years.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Electrician (Marine)~ without more than normal supervision. Duties include: installing and repairing electrical systems and equipment; troubleshooting and diagnosing electrical failures or malfunctions; reading and interpreting blueprints, wiring diagrams and engineering drawings. - Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

  • Physical effort: Incumbent performs work from ladders, scaffolding, and platforms and where the parts, equipment, or systems are in hand-to-reach places. Work requires the incumbent to stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb, and work in a tiring and uncomfortable position. Frequently lifts, carries, and sets up parts and equipment that weigh up to 40 pounds.
  • Working Conditions: Works inside and outside in weather that is occasionally disagreeable; dirt and grease are frequently disagreeable, caused by working on equipment, in marine hulls, and barge compartments; noise is frequently intensely disagreeable, caused by working in and around engine and generators located in holds of floating plant; fumes and smoke are frequently unpleasant; and the wearing of a helmet is occasionally unpleasant. Incumbent is constantly exposed to electrocution while working on AC and DC electrical systems.
