Summary

This position is located in the Pacific Southwest Region, Region 5, Klamath National Forest, Scott-Salmon Ranger District.

The primary purpose of this position is to lead a small crew performing presale duties, including cruising, sale layout and marking in support of the unit's timber management program.

Duties

  • The responsibilities listed below are at full performance level.
  • Select and mark trees to be harvested or left uncut.
  • Identify species based on tree characteristics common to the area.
  • Lead employees by identifying, distributing, and balancing the workload and tasks in accordance with established workflow and skill level.
  • Establish work priorities to ensure timely accomplishment of assigned team tasks.
  • Instruct employees in specific tasks and job techniques and provides on the job training to new employees.
  • Use layout tools such as Relaskop, diameter tape, and compass for sample tree selection.
  • Maintain records of data collections while supporting resource management professionals.
  • Estimate volume and value of stands by using sampling methods such as Probability Proportional to Prediction (3-P), fixed area and variable plots.

Qualifications

Specialized Experience Requirement:

For
GS-05: One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-04 grade level. Examples include: Selected and marked individual trees for harvest using well defined marking guidelines, silvicultural prescriptions, and specific instruction; For the most commonly used sampling methods, estimated individual tree volume and value of stands; Traversed harvest units and processed information to help produce area maps.
OR
Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree (a) with major study in forestry, range management, agriculture, or a subject-matter field directly related to the position, or (b) that included at least 24 semester hours in any combination of courses such as forestry, agriculture, crop or plant science, range management or conservation, wildlife management, watershed management, soil science, natural resources (except marine fisheries and oceanography), outdoor recreation management, civil or forest engineering, or wildland fire science. No more than 6 semester hours in mathematics is creditable.
OR
Combinations of successfully completed post-high school education (in excess of the first 60 semester/90 quarter hours) and specialized experience. The education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university.

For GS-06: One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-05 grade level. Examples include: Performed preparatory work for timber cruises, such as traversing and mapping units to be cruised; Estimated volumes and quality of timber during cruises using established quality standards; Measured diameters, heights, limited defects, etc. and summarized/reported data collected as to type, grade, species, size, etc.; Described general conditions found, including possible logging difficulties and helped prepare timber sale maps; Determined merchantable volume by use of prescribed volume tables, techniques, and specific instructions.

For GS-6: There is no substitution of education for specialized experience.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
