Summary

This position is located within the United States Department of Agriculture, Agricultural Research Service, at the Subtropical Horticulture Research Station (SHRS), in Miami, Florida.

The primary responsibility of the incumbent is to develop, evaluate, and apply 'next generation' technologies to improve detection and monitoring of adult fruit fly populations in the field by using automated systems not requiring regular human intervention to count and identify trap captures.

Duties

Help
  • Improve post-harvest detection of fruit fly larval infestation within host fruit by using non-destructive imaging and/or chemical sampling techniques.
  • Use knowledge and expertise toward development of novel detection approaches for other agricultural pests that threaten to invade or have established in south Florida.
  • Develop advanced technologies for rapid, reliable detection of pest tephritid fruit flies.
  • Evaluate applications of robotics, unmanned aerial drones, and nanotechnology as warranted for improving pest detection networks.

Qualifications

Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement including specialized experience and/or education, as defined below.

Basic Requirement:

Entomology Series, 0414 Basic Requirements

  1. Degree: entomology; or a related discipline of the biological or physical sciences that included at least 16 semester hours in entomology. OR
  2. Combination of education and experience: courses equivalent to a major that included course work as shown in 1. above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
AND

In addition to meeting the basic requirements described above, applicants must also meet additional qualification requirements as stated below.

At the GS-12:

Applicants must demonstrate at least one full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 grade level in the Federal service or possess a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree or possess an equivalent combination of graduate level education and experience. Graduate education must be directly related to the work of the position and must have equipped applicants with the knowledge, skills, and experience necessary to do the work.

Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. The specialized experience requirements for the GS-12 level of this position are: Experience conducting research on trapping and detection systems for invasive insect pests; experience involving the use of 'next generation' technologies, such as electronics, remote monitoring, mathematical modeling, or imaging techniques for pest detection; experience in maintaining laboratory colonies of test insects; experience in evaluating applications of robotics, unmanned aerial drones, and nanotechnology as warranted for improving pest detection networks; and planning and conducting independent research and report results in peer-reviewed journals.

At the GS-13:
Applicants must demonstrate at least one full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-12 grade level in the Federal service.

Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. The specialized experience requirements for the GS-13 level of this position are: Experience conducting research on trapping and detection systems for invasive insects, ideally for tropical fruit flies (family Tephritidae); experience involving the use of 'next generation' technologies, such as electronics, remote monitoring, mathematical modeling, or imaging techniques for pest detection; experience in designing, developing, or evaluating new insect traps and/or automated monitoring systems, such as 'smart traps' equipped with electronic sensors (e.g. laser, sonic, photo detectors) capable of counting and identifying trapped insects based on unique characters (e.g. wing beat frequency, size, weight, color pattern); experience in maintaining laboratory colonies of test insects, preferably tephritid fruit flies; experience in evaluating applications of robotics, unmanned aerial drones, and nanotechnology as warranted for improving pest detection networks; planning and conducting independent complex research and report results in peer-reviewed journals; and promotion of research products and research programs to customer/stakeholder groups.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

This position requires the selectee to undergo a pre-employment check and a full background investigation. The incumbent will be subject to periodic reinvestigations.

Research scientists have open-ended promotion potential. Research accomplishments and their impact on the duties and responsibilities of positions are evaluated periodically. The grade level is limited only by the individual's demonstrated ability to perform research of recognized importance to science and technology. *Final grade level may be determined by a peer review panel.
