Duties

Help

The mission of this position is to maintain the integrity and proper operation and the quality of patient care at a maximum. Work Leader utilizes the same tools, materials, equipment and leads a WG-4804-10 Locksmith and a WG-4804-9 Locksmith, six WG-4749-9 Maintenance Mechanics, and two WG-4102-9 Painters. This position is that of a work leader in the Building Structures Unit (BSU) shop and consists of the work, ability, and duties of the journeyman structures leader, WL-4749-9. Major duties include but not limited to:

  • Independently performs the duties of a maintenance mechanic while also serving as a work leader for the mechanic team working along with other workers and setting the pace.
  • Plans, coordinates, and directs work operations of the BSU.
  • Serves as project leader supervisors' representative for In-House projects which could require after hours work, weekends, and holidays.
  • Provides first level approval of requests for parts, shop tools and vendor/contractor services.
  • Utilizes highly developed knowledge of carpentry, mason, painting and locksmith principles to repair and maintain varied buildings, building furnishes and all other BSU issues.
  • Demonstrates proper work methods ensuring needed plans, blueprints, materials, and tools are available, and that needed stock is obtained from supply locations.
  • Maintains a current knowledge, and answering questions of other workers on procedures, policies, written instructions, and other directives such as technical orders..
  • Checks work in progress whether the supervisor's instructions on work sequence, procedures, methods, and deadlines have been met.
  • Assures safety and housekeeping rules are followed.
  • Reports to supervisors on status and progress of work, causes of work delays; and answers questions of supervisors on overall work operations and problems.
  • Constructs, alters, repairs, and maintains a variety of wood structures, concrete, locks and painting where accuracy and fit are essential and structural soundness and appearance are important
  • Completes and assembles constructed items often requiring exacting curves, angles, and straight cuts to fit closely joined assemblies.
  • Repairs and alters items and structures which requires knowing size, shape and purposes to measure, cut and fit products.
  • Uses varied measuring devices to accomplish precise measurements.
  • Uses shop mathematics to plan and compute complex and exact projects involving arcs, tangents roof pitches, and trusses.
  • Cuts, bevels, rabbets, chamfers, dados, grooves and miters joints.
  • Builds and constructs varied cement forms, such as steps, curbs, retaining walls and catch basins using curves, angles and straight lines.
  • Demonstrates a working knowledge of all types of locks and locking devices.
  • Determines quantities of materials for all projects within BSU.
  • Ability to work from blueprints and architectural drawings to determine placement of walls, doors and windows.
  • Knowledge of applicable NFPA codes and VA standards including but not limited to: NFPA 101 (Life Safety) and NFPA 99 (Health Care Facilities).
  • Demonstrates good working knowledge of VA Construction Standards.
  • Demonstrates efficiency in basic computer skills.
Work Schedule: Monday thru Friday, 8:00 am - 4:30 pm (subject to change based on the needs of the agency)

Physical Requirements: Work requires light to moderate heavy lifting and physical effort between 10 and 90 pounds while transporting, carrying, pulling, moving, handling of setting up ladders, scaffolding materials and tools. Work requires kneeling, crouching, stooping, bending, climbing, walking and standing long periods of time. Work inside and outside under extreme temperatures, in cramped spaces, on roofs, under buildings, and in attics. Works from ladders, scaffolding and lifts.
