Summary

This position is located in the Alaska Region, R10, Tongass National Forest, Sitka Ranger District.

The primary duties include purchasing and procurement transactions, office machine operations, word processing, and special project assignments. The incumbent works closely with Forest Service employees as well as the public.

Duties

  • Provide a full range of standard and non-standard assignments resolving a variety of non-recurring problems.
  • Identify and understand issues to determine steps and procedures necessary and the order of their performance to accomplish administrative tasks
  • Reads and keep apprised of organizational and Agency-wide directives and procedures in order to be aware of changes and new requirements affecting the work of the organization.
  • Use word processing software and printing equipment to create, copy, edit, store, retrieve, and print a variety of standardized documents. Process correspondence, reports, and forms for both hard-copy and electronic format.
  • Greet visitors, answer the telephone, and distribute incoming and outgoing mail.
  • Provide answers to a wide variety of inquiries. Provide explanations of office functions, describing specific requirements, providing basic instructions, or a similar degree of detail. Performs data entry and typing tasks as needed.
  • Provide routine information and answers many types of inquiries on all research and/or forest activities such as the whereabouts of key personnel and directions to recreation facilities.
  • Provide purchasing support which involves purchase, receipt, shipment and storage of needed supplies and equipment
  • Make payment on requisitions and purchase orders; Return unacceptable articles and/or services. Use appropriate software to document and reconcile procurement's.
  • Serve as a point of contact for timekeeping; assist employees with posting of hours worked and leave to ensure time-sheet is properly documented.
  • Provide instruction and support in the use of computer-based travel program.
  • Serve as housing coordinator. Schedule units for occupancy, coordinating with supervisors/employees to arrange for season, volunteers and employees in bunkhouse.
  • Review property documents involving new, transfers, or disposal of property for completion and accuracy.
  • Assure property transactions are properly handled and documented. Maintains property records including custodian inventories and annual reports.
  • Use database or spreadsheet software to enter, revise, sort, or calculate, and retrieve data for standard reports.
  • Serve as Collection Officer to sell such items as National Forest maps, (Forest Product Sale Permits), and Golden Age Passports, etc. in accordance with manual and handbook.
  • Maintains accountability records as required.
  • Perform other duties as assigned and specified by supervisor.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualification Requirements for the GS-05:

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-04 level in the federal service. Specialized experience is defined as greeting visitors and responding to phone and written inquiries personally or referring to other staff as appropriate; maintaining written records and files in electronic and/or hard-copy filing systems; and using word processing software and printing equipment to create, copy, edit, store, retrieve, and print standardized documents ensuring correct grammar, spelling, punctuation, and format.

OR: A successfully completed a bachelor degree or 4 years of successfully completed education above the high school level in any field. The education must have been obtained from an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college or university.

OR; A combination of successfully completed post-high school education (in excess of the first 60 semester hours) and specialized experience as listed above. The education must have been obtained from an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college or university.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
