Duties

Help
  • Utilize medical terminology and elementary understanding of anatomy and physiology in order to research entire contents of medical records and to respond to a variety of requests from patients, insurance, legal, social service and other activities.
  • Ability to operate a computer and type labels, forms and brief written materials and to gather information from several electronic systems to produce a complete record.
  • Ability to abstract only information that provides a direct response to the request to maintain efficiency.
  • Assess and resolve customer inquiries and/or complaints promptly to ensure quality customer service is provided.
  • Manage workload distribution and assignments appropriately to ensure steady flow and efficiency, the expeditious handling of priorities, meeting deadlines and adjusting to changes in workload.

In order to qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Specialized Experience : One year of experience equivalent to the GS-05 grade level in the Federal Service with work that demonstrates experience with HIPAA law and state privacy laws, and local directives pertaining to the release of health care information and disposition of medical records; managing workload distribution and assignments; maintaining medical records in accordance with regulations utilizing terminal digit filing system, preparation of correspondence and summaries of medical records for external and internal requests; and audits medical records documentation for accuracy and completeness.

Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-05).

Education

About the Position: This position is scheduled to transfer to the Defense Health Agency (DHA) no later than 30 Sept 2021 in accordance with the provisions of Section 702 of the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2017, Public Law 114-328. The Act directed the DHA to take responsibility for the administration (i.e., authority, direction, and control) of military treatment facilities beginning 1 Oct 18. Employees will become DoD employees upon transfer to the DHA.
