Duties

Help

As a Invasive Species Program Manger within the Office of the Associate Director for Ecosystems, some of your specific duties will include:

  • Serves as technical staff expert on invasive species in the USGS Ecosystems Mission Area.
  • Leads USGS invasive species activities across Ecosystems Mission Area in collaboration with the Department and other agencies and organizations; coordinates with other mission areas and represents USGS at intra-agency meetings.
  • Develops and evaluates national science program strategies and activities in collaboration with other agencies and organizations to address invasive species issues.
  • Prepares materials and communications to explain, support, advocate, and defend invasive species research in the USGS, the Department, the Office of Management and Budget, other agencies and organizations, and before Congressional staff and committees.
  • Manages and tracks the invasive species budget, develops budget justifications and initiatives, establishes funding priorities, and ensures consistency with Ecosystem Mission Area goals.
  • Operates a government owned or leased vehicle as an incidental driver.
Salary: $107,807 (Step 01) to $140,146 (Step 10); NOTE: First time hires to the Federal Government are typically hired at the Step 01.

Are There Any Special Requirements For This Position?
  • Because this position requires travel for official business, the selectee will be required to apply for a charge card within 30 calendar days of appointment. Qualifications

BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT FOR BIOLOGIST, GS-0401: Applicants must meet A or B below to satisfy the basic education requirement for Biologist, all grade levels.

A. Degree in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position.

B. Combination of education and experience--courses equivalent to a major, as shown in A above (24 semester hours or the equivalent in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position), plus appropriate experience and/or additional education for a total of 4 years. The education or combined education and experience must be comparable in type, scope and thoroughness to that acquired through successful completion of a 4-year course of study as described in "A" above. BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT FOR ECOLOGIST, GS-0408: Applicants must meet the following to satisfy the basic education requirement for Ecologist, all grade levels.

Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in biology or a related field of science underlying ecological research that included at least 30 semester hours or the equivalent in basic and applied biological sciences. These hours must have included at least 9 semester hours or the equivalent in ecology, and 12 semester hours or the equivalent in physical and mathematical sciences.

FOR GS-14:

In addition to the basic education requirement as stated above, applicants must have one year of appropriate professional experience equivalent to at least the GS-13 level in the Federal service. Examples of such experience could include: 1) planning, executing, and reporting on original studies requiring innovative approaches to solving new problems for invasive species; 2) making complicated decisions or policies; 3) leading invasive species management issues; and 4) considerable experience working with Federal and State natural resource managers and management agencies to understand management needs, especially with invasive species. The complexity of this work typically required extensive modification and adaptation of standard procedures, methods, and techniques, and the development of new methods and techniques to address problems for which guidelines or precedents were not applicable. The selectee must have demonstrated knowledge and technical ability to understand and integrate various elements of invasive species ecology/biology.
