Performs animal caretaker duties including, observing animals, preparing feeds and liquids, and handling animals.
Oversees breeding or reproduction of animals according to their physical traits or to produce given numbers of animals.
Utilizes measuring instruments to perform the duties of an animal caretaker including, weighing scales, thermometers, pressure gauges, rulers/measuring tape, and water sight tubes..
Provides feed and liquids to animals according to specific instructions for special diets as directed by the supervisor or scientists.
Utilizes and maintains equipment to perform the duties of an animal caretaker including, tractor with loader, forklift, pallet jack, roto-tiller, hand tools, power tools, automatic feeding systems, grain augers, dump trailers, and incinerators.
Considers such factors as age, sex, and their general physical condition when determining such things as the amount and type of nesting materials that are required or when to dehorn, shear, or groom them.
Applies knowledge of the temperament of individual animals and skill to handle them or to perform such work as shearing or force feeding.
Males born after 12/31/1959 must be Selective Service registered or exempt

Successful completion of one-year probationary period, unless previously served.

Qualifications will be determined under the Job Element Rating System X-118C, Qualifications Standard Handbook. While a specific length of time and experience is not required for most Wage Grade positions, you must show through experience and training that you possess the best qualified level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of this position. Qualification requirements emphasize the quality of experience, not necessarily the length. The responses to the questionnaire and your resume should be in significant detail to provide the person rating your application with a good understanding of your ability to do the job, technical knowledge, work, and training experience, etc. (For example You must have the ability to perform the duties of a, Animal Caretaker without more than normal supervision (Screen Out)). Working Conditions:
Work is performed inside and outside. Outside work involves discomfort having to spend long periods of time in the sun, occasionally bad weather, and exposure to bites, scratches, and animal wastes. May be exposed to contagious diseases.
Inside work requires standing on damp concrete floors for long periods
Physical efforts:
Stands, walks, or stoops for extended periods and may be required to lift and carry materials weighing up to 100 pounds. Heavy physical effort may be exerted in restraining or moving large animals.
