Duties

Help

As a Weapon Quality Engineer, you will:

  • Provides oversight of multiple aspects of contractor operations, including evaluation of management and operations involved in an integrated design and manufacturing complex.
  • Reviews documents and technical reports, ensuring consistent interpretation of NAP-24A, Weapon Quality Policy, Technical Business Practices (TBP), Requirements Modernization Instructions (RMI) and Quality Assurance Program (QAP) manual and design agency intent per the applicable drawings and specifications.
  • Provides input on technical reports and briefings for quality/production problem areas, describing the nature of the problem, proposed solutions, and recommendations, and analyzes the effect on system quality and program schedule.
  • Represents SFO at various conferences and meetings with the contractor, DOE weapon design laboratories, other contractors and Field Offices, NNSA Programs Organizations, and Department of Defense Agencies, to exchange information, to participate in problem resolution and to remain current on changes occurring in assigned areas of responsibility.
  • Working with SFO QA team members and stakeholders, supports the resolution of complex weapon production and/or quality assurance problems and to assure that schedules and requirements are achieved in the best economic and logistical interests of the Government.

Qualifications

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

A qualified candidate’s online application and resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the next lower NNSA pay band or GS grade level (EN-00, NN-02, NQ-02 or GS-12) in Federal Service.

To be qualifying, experience must demonstrate practical knowledge of policies, procedures, and management principles to provide oversight of nuclear weapons quality. Examples of qualifying experience include: participation in the conduct of quality assurance surveys/assessments on systems, processes, or procedure; participation in the development or execution of inspection processes to accept weapon components; and/or participation role to monitor/resolve a cross-cutting or difficult weapon quality assurance issue.

  1. Knowledge and skill in the application of advanced principles, concepts, theories, and practices of multiple engineering disciplines to include the following engineering disciplines: nuclear, mechanical, chemical, electrical, systems, and industrial engineering.

  2. Knowledge of and skill in applying advanced engineering drawing and specification systems and the ability to apply new theories and approaches to complex products and processes.
  3. Skill in preparing written technical reports and other documentation using standard office automation and computer tools. Skill in summarizing and orally presenting complex technical information.

  4. Negotiation and interpersonal skills sufficient to effectively secure the cooperation of parties involved in the resolution of problems relating to the quality assurance operations of a manufacturing facility

  5. Ability to interpret and apply guidelines, directives, issuances through the Assistant Manager for Operations, technical literature, standard practices, and contract specifications to novel and unprecedented situations.

EDUCATION:

A. Degree: Engineering. To be acceptable, the program must: (1) lead to a bachelor’s degree in a school of engineering with at least one program accredited by ABET; or (2) include differential and integral calculus and courses (more advanced than first-year physics and chemistry) in five of the following seven areas of engineering science or physics: (a) statics, dynamics; (b) strength of materials (stress-strain relationships); (c) fluid mechanics, hydraulics; (d) thermodynamics; (e) electrical fields and circuits; (f) nature and properties of materials (relating particle and aggregate structure to properties); and (g) any other comparable area of fundamental engineering science or physics, such as optics, heat transfer, soil mechanics, or electronics.

OR

B. Combination of education and experience -- college-level education, training, and/or technical experience that furnished (1) a thorough knowledge of the physical and mathematical sciences underlying engineering, and (2) a good understanding, both theoretical and practical, of the engineering sciences and techniques and their applications to one of the branches of engineering. The adequacy of such background must be demonstrated by one of the following: 1) Professional registration or licensure; 2) Written Test; 3) Specified academic course; 4) Related curriculum. Education must be obtained from an accredited institution recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.
