Summary

The incumbent is assigned to the Cereal Disease Research Unit/Laboratory in St. Paul, Minnesota. The Cereal Disease Laboratory is a national center and international point of contact for cereal rust and Fusarium head blight research with the objective of reducing damage caused by rusts and Fusarium head blight on small grain cereal crops. The incumbent leads investigations into the molecular basis of host-pathogen interactions as it relates to Fusarium head blight of barley.

Help
  • Develop research program aimed at understanding and ultimately preventing, losses due to Fusarium head blight of barley.
  • Develop new approaches for disease control by leveraging fundamental research knowledge of the barley-pathogen interaction.
  • Develop Fusarium head blight resistant barley germplasm.

Qualifications

Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement including specialized experience and/or education, as defined below.

This is an interdisciplinary position and may be filled in any of the job series/position titles listed. In addition to the specialized experience requirements, applicants must submit proof that they meet the educational requirements for at least one of the series described in the announcement. Applicants may only be appointed to job series/position titles for which they meet all experience and educational requirements.

Basic Requirements:

Plant Pathology Series, 0434
Degree:plant pathology; or a related scientific discipline that included at least 20 semester hours in basic botany or plant science and 10 semester hours in plant pathology.

Genetics series, 0440
Degree: genetics; or one of the basic biological sciences that included at least 9 semester hours in genetics.

Additional Requirements:
In addition to meeting the basic requirements for one of the series described above, applicants must also meet additional qualification requirements as stated below.

GS-12: Applicants must have a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree directly related to the duties of the position (i.e. plant pathology, plant biology, plant molecular biology, plant genomics, or plant genetics) OR 1 year of specialized experience (defined below) equivalent to at least the GS-11 grade level in the Federal Service OR a combination of graduate level education and specialized experience.

GS-13: Applicants must have 1 year of specialized experience (defined below) equivalent to at least the GS-12 grade level in the Federal Service.

Specialized Experience:
Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. Specialized experience must be described for each grade level advertised.

The specialized experience requirements for this position at the GS-12 level are:
* Conducting research related to plant diseases in crops; AND
* Utilizing molecular or genomic techniques to address fundamental questions of host-pathogen interaction and disease management in crops; AND
* Publishing research results in peer-reviewed scientific journals related to plant pathology and plant genetics.

The specialized experience requirements for this position at the GS-13 level are:
* Planning and conducting independent research related to plant diseases in cereal crops; AND
* Developing molecular or genomic techniques to address fundamental questions of host-pathogen interaction and disease management in cereal crops; AND
* Publishing independent research results in peer-reviewed journals related to plant pathology and plant genetics.
