Duties

Help
  • This position works under the lead engineer providing engineering services needed to meet Field Office objectives.
  • Assists in establishing road locations, surveying, road inspections and contract administration.
  • Participates as an interdisciplinary team member providing technical input to a wide variety of programs such as timber, right-of-ways, recreation, fisheries and roads.
  • Preparing contract stipulations, exhibits and cost estimates, conducting and documenting pre-work conferences, performing on-site inspections and tests for contract payments.
  • Preparing NEPA documentation and responding to requests for construction and terms and conditions of use and gathering assessment data.

GS-5: You must possess one (1) full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-04 level that is equivalent in difficulty and complexity as indicated by the following examples: conducting surveys, typically with an assistant, using hand instruments such as hand levels and compasses, making simple traverse surveys using compass and tape, measuring small land areas, using rod, tape and hand level, to obtain rough estimates of yardage to be excavated; and performing recording assignments which require concentration and specialized skill such as that required in making manual computations that involve elementary arithmetic processes made complex by virtue of the number and variety of manipulations involved and the speed with which successive readings are called -OR- Successful completion of a full four year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree with major study in an appropriate field such as surveying, engineering, construction, or that included at least 24 semester hours in any combination of courses such as surveying, engineering, industrial technology construction, physics, drafting, forestry, geography, navigation, cartography, physical science or mathematics.

Undergraduate level education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of this position.

GS-6: You must possess one (1) full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-05 level that is equivalent in difficulty and complexity as indicated by the following examples: extracting data from a variety of sources (e.g., field notes, design manuals, laboratory reports, handbooks, etc.) requiring knowledge of the applicability and use of the data and the characteristics of the sources; recognizing and reporting errors, non-consistencies, and other deficiencies in the technical data; selecting the method for presenting the data for internal use, using tabular and graphic means; and plotting roadway alignments, grade lines, cross sections, culvert locations, and related information from field notes and other sources -OR- Successful completion of one full year of graduate education directly related to the work of the position.

GS-7: You must possess one (1) full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-06 level that is equivalent in difficulty and complexity as indicated by the following examples: performing a wide range of standard and special purpose tests of soils, concrete, and other materials used in construction of dams, tunnels, power plants, etc.; calibrating laboratory equipment and modifying test equipment or procedures to meet unusual field conditions or special requirements; and inspecting contractor's concrete manufacturing operation for compliance with specifications and recommending, through supervisor, correction of concrete mix -OR- Successful completion of one full year of graduate education directly related to the work of the position.

Graduate level education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of this position.

Superior Academic Achievement (See OPM's General Policies, Application of Qualification Standards Section 4.f.) S.A.A. must have been gained in a curriculum that is qualifying for the position to be filled.

Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade requirement in accordance with 5 CFR 300.604. If you are a current Federal employee in the General Schedule (GS) pay plan and applying for a promotion opportunity, you must have completed a minimum of 52 weeks at the next lower grade level.

Physical Demands:
Office work requires only routine walking, sitting, and carrying of light items. Field work is physically demanding. Incumbent must be capable of extended periods of walking, bending, stooping, and working in the backcountry on rough, uneven, rocky, slippery, and mountainous or desert terrain. It may at times be necessary to carry moderately heavy equipment weighing up to 50 pounds in accomplishing the work. In this environment, the incumbent must possess strength, stamina, and agility to successfully accomplish the fieldwork.

Work Environment:
Work is routinely performed in a properly heated/cooled indoor office setting and outdoors (in extremely hot/cold/windy/dry/wet weather, rugged terrain, remote sites, and at construction sites) and occasionally at public meetings.

Work hazards include; remote areas (unpopulated and semi-populated), crossing mountainous streams, lightning, wildfires, proximity to animals (both wild and domestic), poisonous snakes, poison oak, stinging insects, foot and vehicular travel in rain/snow/ice on uneven steep mountainous terrain/winding roads, which may include heavy brush or debris accumulations, construction sites (falling objects, chemicals, dust, noise, heavy construction equipment) and proximity to mechanical and electrical systems.

A valid State driver's license and overnight travel is required.

Education
