Duties

Help

As the Director of Development, you will:

  • Develop short and long-range fundraising strategies for all programs planned for the Gallery, in consultation with the External Affairs and Audience Engagement Officer.
  • Advise National Gallery Director and External Affairs and Audience Engagement Officer on all aspects of private development including meeting and corresponding with donors and directing fundraising assignments and strategies. Proposes and develops the potential sources of funding, researches and reports on fundraising trends, marketing strategies, fluctuations in the economy, and changes in public policy. Implements the fundraising strategy and reports on progress towards goals, including specific status of proposals.
  • Plan and monitor progress of the Trustees Council, Collector’s Committee, The Circle of the National Gallery of Art and the Fund for International Exchange of Art.
  • Develop and implement strategies to expand and diversify the Gallery’s national donor base, organizes, and executes solicitations and administers the Gallery’s Circle and National Membership programs. Activities include, but are not limited to, writing, designing and overseeing production of program materials and digital marketing campaigns, purchasing and creating solicitation lists, developing programs, membership benefits and special events, creating financial tracking systems, and integrating programs with other ongoing development of potential prospects.
  • Manage own portfolio of major gift donors and prospects. Draft and over see production of gift solicitation materials for individuals, foundations, and corporations as appropriate.
  • Coordinate design and publication of funding proposals, brochures and special solicitation literature.
  • Plans organize and execute the Fund for the International Exchange of Art.
  • Develop and implement strategies for long-term cultivation of individuals who will diversify the National Gallery’s major gift and future leadership base.
  • Ensure continuing progress toward the Gallery’s funding goals through frequent communication with the External Affairs and Audience Engagement Officer, Treasurer’s office, and Director.

Qualifications

Candidates must meet the Qualification Standards Handbook requirements for the AD-301-15. A qualified candidate's online application and resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the AD-14 in the Federal service. Specialized experience is at least one year of experience (combined), equivalent in responsibility to the AD-14 grade level in the Federal service, leading a development office in the development and implementation of overall development and fundraising strategies and goals for an organization.

  1. Proven ability to initiate a fundraising plan and secure support on a national and international level for numerous and diverse programs.

  2. Knowledge of fundraising strategies.

  3. Strong administrative, interpersonal and presentation skills.

  4. Researching, writing, and editorial proficiency.

  5. Knowledge of research methods and information resources.

  6. Ability to work effectively and cooperatively with Gallery Staff.

  7. Demonstrated ability to supervise an immediate staff of ten or more professionals.
