Duties

Help

As a Fingerprint Specialist you will perform the following duties at the full performance level:

  • Conduct forensic analyses to develop and identify friction ridges
  • Prepare, communicate, and report examination results and conclusions and illustrative exhibits for court use
  • Serve as an expert witness in federal and other court systems to present evidence and testimony pertaining to results of examinations
  • Serve as a subject matter expert, providing authoritative advice in the field of friction ridge examination

In order to be considered for this position, you must meet the individual occupational requirement, certification requirement and specialized experience requirement for this position.

GS-11 - INDIVIDUAL OCCUPATIONAL REQUIREMENT FOR THE GS-0072 JOB SERIES:

Possess one year of specialized experience at the GS-09 grade level or equivalent performing duties such as:

  • Performing difficult latent fingerprint examinations;
  • Preparing written laboratory reports based on examinations;
  • Testifying as an expert witness in the area of latent fingerprint examinations.

GS-11- SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT:
You qualify for the GS-11 grade level if you possess one (1) year of specialized experience at the GS-09 grade level or equivalent performing duties such as:
  • Examining complicated forensic friction ridge analyses;
  • Determining appropriate methodology and sequential chemical and physical processing;
  • Assisting in testing new forensic friction ridge processing equipment.
GS-12 - INDIVIDUAL OCCUPATIONAL REQUIREMENT FOR THE GS-0072 JOB SERIES:
Possess one year of specialized experience at the GS-11 grade level or equivalent performing duties such as:
  • Analyzing complex fingerprint cases and imperfect and partial latent fingerprint impressions that contain only the minimum number of points necessary to make an identification;
  • Conducting methods development projects to improve latent fingerprint examination capabilities.

GS-12- SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT:
You qualify for the GS-12 grade level if you possess one (1) year of specialized experience at the GS-11 grade level or equivalent performing duties such as:
  • Examining complicated forensic friction ridge analyses;
  • Determining appropriate methodology and sequential chemical and physical processing;
  • Assisting in testing new forensic friction ridge processing equipment;
  • Participating in the development of programs, policies, and procedures to ensure laboratory procedures, forensic examinations, and evidence handling procedures are current and are within the scope of the relevant scientific communities.
CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENT:
To be qualified for this position you must possess a Professional Certification as a Latent Print Examiner through the International Association for Identification (IAI) or other approved organization. Or must be obtained within one year of employment.
