Duties

Help

As a Deputy Director, you will:

  • Coordinate with and develop a thorough, detailed understanding of the work of the NNSA headquarters’ program offices, NNSA site offices, and NNSA national laboratories. As required, attends program meetings on major issues to keep informed and to gather information.
  • Develop and recommend communication plans and outreach strategies to promote and defend NNSA programs and provide information about NNSA to the general public and media.
  • Implement relevant actions to support and achieve DOE/NNSA goals concerning public awareness and public communication formats that allow full and open communication both internally and among national, state, and local target audiences.
  • Build and maintain productive relationships with media representatives and public affairs personnel of specialized groups. Determines best, most effective methods for working more closely and effectively with media and groups in communicating with audiences interested in or affected by NNSA programs.
  • Advise the NNSA Administrator and senior management regarding public affairs strategies and the preparation and implementation of communication initiatives and activities that are consistent with corporate communications goals to reach targeted and broad-based audiences.

Qualifications

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

A qualified candidate's online application and resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the next lower NNSA pay band or GS grade level in the Federal service i.e. EN-03 or GS-13. Specialized experience for this position is defined as: Experience conducting, managing, or coordinating organizational initiatives and responses to legislative and public affairs inquiries, issues, or mandates.

Examples of specialized experience may include: developing public, community, or media relations programs or events; developing responses to media inquiries; and writing, reviewing or approving public release information.

  1. Ability to manage a team of public affairs specialist’s daily activities and perform the full range of supervisory responsibilities for a media relations staff in a Public Affairs office.
  2. Ability to apply principles, practices, methods, and techniques of public communications, media relations, and outreach activities in order to plan, coordinate, and carry out such activities.
  3. Skill in establishing and fostering effective working relationships and interaction with a variety of audiences including the media, and the general public.
  4. Skill in preparing concise and clear documents, utilizing multiple sources and types of information, with short notice and compressed deadlines.
