Summary

This position is located in the Bureau of Justice Statistics, Publication and Dissemination unit. The incumbent, as a member of a team of writer-editors and communications staff, is responsible for writing, editing, producing, and disseminating BJS reports and informational products in various formats and at a level appropriate for the intended audience in order to promote thorough understanding.

Writes, edits, and reviews reports or information materials for diverse audiences. Identifies data sources and highlights key issues and program requirements. Writes succinct and well-referenced summaries.

Drafts programs, policies, functions, and topics that affect agency mission, such as statistical reports, press releases, brochures, and reports to congress. Reviews new material for factual accuracy, timeliness, completeness, responsiveness, and copyright compliance.

Creates or edits statistical graphics and tables using standard desktop software when required. Prepares page layouts of reports for publication, incorporating text, tables, graphics, and footnotes using desktop publishing system.

Consults with editorial team on the maintenance of a master schedule of publications through all phases of production. Consults with the technical editor and the Chief of the Publication and Dissemination Unit to determine size, complexity, timing, and priority of publications under development.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

GS-11
Qualifying experience for the GS-11 level includes one year of specialized experience at least equivalent to GS-9 which is in or directly related to the line of work of the position to be filled and which has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position.

Specialized experience includes work where you used advanced features on word processing programs, including styles, techniques, templates and formatting, such as created tables, merge functions and desktop publishing/graphics software; or, wrote or edited materials such as news features, reports, articles, pamphlets, training manuals, or scripts presenting factual information that was clear and meaningful to the intended audience; using advanced features on word process programs to include styles, techniques, templates and formatting, such as create tables, merge functions and desktop publishing/graphics software.

SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION FOR EXPERIENCE: Experience requirements at the GS-11 level may be met by three (3) full academic years of graduate level education or the successful completion of a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree.

COMBINATION OF EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Equivalent combinations of successfully completed education and experience may be used to meet the experience requirements.

GS-12

Qualifying experience for the GS-12 level includes one year of specialized experience at least equivalent to the GS-11 level which is in or directly related to the line of work of the position to be filled and which has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position.

Specialized experience includes work where you developed the information needed to write or edit complete and accurate materials; edited a variety of specialized subject matter materials such as compiled and edited an organization's annual report; or developed a variety of conventional products that accurately depicted or communicated information and ideas through the use of visual/audio materials; using automated office publishing processes/procedures, such as using various search engines or searching techniques that interface with relational databases.

TECHNICAL QUALIFICATIONS

Applicants who meet the minimum qualifications as described above will be further evaluated based upon the following technical qualifications:

Ability to write and edit materials containing complex technical ideas for a variety of audiences.
Knowledge of style for publications, posters, brochures, and other printed material.
Ability to perform editorial review of manuscripts and copy for cultural sensitivity, content, accuracy, and writing.
Ability to meet and deal with others.
Ability to communicate effectively in writing
