Duties

Help
  • Works with living and preserved arthropods such as ticks and other biological specimens in a way that maintains biological integrity of DNA, RNA and proteins to be isolated from these specimens.
  • Collects, prepares, evaluates verifies and maintains accession logs of samples and supporting records related to projects in the laboratory.
  • Maintains, calibrates and modifies complex/specialized equipment and automated systems used for test and evaluation procedures.
  • Searches for literature pertinent to arthropods insects for new procedures or techniques to use in the field or laboratory environment.
  • Interprets and documents findings by preparing information to be included in manuscripts or preparing reports summarizing progress or results of research.
  • Performs the full range of entomology, molecular biology, microbiology or genetic techniques and studies using a variety of specialized equipment.
  • Adapts, modifies or develops new techniques and/or procedures to satisfy the needs of the research project.
  • Tabulates, summarizes and statistically analyzes data using personal computers and software packages.

At the GS 08
Qualifying experience for GS-08 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-07 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience participating in a biological science research project involving collecting and evaluating arthropods samples for entomology, molecular biology, microbiology or genetic research; assisting with using laboratory equipment or techniques; and keeping records of experimental data.

OR

Education: Two full years of graduate level education or a Master's degree, if directly related to the position. Related degrees may include Entomology, Microbiology, biotechnology, or Genetics.

OR

A combination of graduate education and specialized experience as described above.

At the GS 09
Qualifying experience for GS-09 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-08 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience participating in a biological science research project that involves medical or veterinary entomology or collecting and evaluating arthropod samples for entomology, molecular biology, microbiology or genetic research; using laboratory equipment and techniques; keeping records of experimental data; and developing or improving techniques or procedures within the experiment process.

OR

Education: Two full years of graduate level education or a Master's degree, if directly related to the position. Related degrees may include Entomology, Microbiology, biotechnology, or Genetics.

OR

A combination of graduate education and specialized experience as described above.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

You will be evaluated for this job based on how well you meet the qualifications above.
