Help

The major responsibilities of this technician will be to assist patients in initiating CPAP or BiPAP therapy, helping patients already being treated with CPAP or BiPAP devices with equipment needs, interrogating devices, assisting patients with appropriate mask fittings, scoring sleep studies as needed, and performing multiple sleep latency tests. The technician will also support the home sleep study program as needs are determined; tasks may include instructions on how to perform the sleep study at home, coordinating the delivery and retrieval of home sleep study equipment, scoring sleep studies, and providing patient assistance with mask fitting and machine use. The technician will also be responsible for ordering supplies for the sleep laboratory including masks, cables, thermistors, and pressure transducers. This technician will work full time during the day. The position is housed at the San Francisco VA Medical Center in the Pulmonary, Critical Care, Sleep Medicine Section, Medical Service of the San Francisco VA Health Care System.

Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8:00 am - 4:30 pm

Qualifications

Basic Requirements:
United States Citizenship Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.

English Language Proficiency Must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with VA Policy.

Licensure or Certification Licensure or Certification is not required for this occupation; however, it is strongly desirable at GS-6 or above as evidence of possession of the essential knowledge, skills, and abilities. Basic and Advanced Cardiac Life Support certifications are desirable.

May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria).

Grade Determinations:

Medical Instrument Technician (Polysomnography) GS-8: Completion of 1 year of experience equivalent to the GS-7. This would be experience which provided a knowledge of the more complex procedures as well as knowledge of the uncommon and/or rare sleep disorders. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs:

  • Advanced knowledge or the International Classification of Sleep Disorders and the ability to recognize uncommon and/or rare sleep disorders.
  • Ability to summarize and report polysomnographic data in narrative form.
  • Knowledge of event characteristics (e.g., respiratory, cardiac, sleep stage, seizures, etc.) and ability to take appropriate action.
  • Ability to provide briefings and orientation to hospital staff including physicians.

The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-08.

Physical Requirements:
- The tasks of this position generally require sitting, standing, occasional crouching or kneeling
- Lifting is required to move equipment throughout the sleep lab/clinic and other Medical Center locations
- Considerable manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination are continuously required
- Continuous observation of a computer screen- Moderate Lifting (20 LBS and over)
- Moderate Carrying (20LBS and over)
- Walking (up to 3 hours)- Standing (up to 3 hours)
- Repeated bending (up to 1 hour)
- Ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously
- Near vision correctable at 13' to 16
- Any other physical demands necessary to provide outstanding patient care
