  • The position is in Mental Health Service in Psychiatry located in the San Diego VA Medical Center (VAMC), La Jolla, CA, a teaching hospital located next to the UC San Diego, providing a full range of patient care services, with state-of-the-art technology as well as education and research. It is a 256 bed, level 1a, tertiary care center, dedicated to providing both primary and specialized outpatient/extended care, acute medical, surgical, intermediate and psychiatric services.
  • The VASDHS MHCL serves veterans who reside in San Diego and Imperial Counties and provides general and specialized inpatient and outpatient psychiatric services.
  • Inpatient treatment includes general treatment for acute psychiatric problems and a specialized program for alcohol and drug problems.
  • The Medical Center is closely affiliated with the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) School of Medicine. In collaboration with this affiliate, the VASDHS Psychiatry Service oversees the training of psychiatry residents, fellows in psychiatry subspecialties and third- and fourth-year medical students rotating through the inpatient and outpatient settings.
  • The Psychiatry Section in Mental Health Service is also committed to the advancement of knowledge and health care practices with member physicians playing a vital leadership role in basic science, clinical and health services research.
  • The responsibilities of this position will include the provision of clinical psychiatric services for the treatment of psychiatric and substance use disorders.
  • The psychiatrist works primarily as a Staff Psychiatrist in any of the following: the Mental Health Access (MHAC), Tele-mental health clinic, any of the outpatient Mental Health Clinics at VAMC San Diego, and PCMHI (Primary Care Mental Health Integration).
  • The psychiatrist will provide a full continuum of evidence based psychiatric services; including screenings, formal psychiatric assessments, consultation, individual and group treatment, and psycho-education.
  • The psychiatrist should have advanced knowledge of the treatment required by both chronic and acute psychiatric patients.
  • The psychiatrist will also be required to spend some time using tele-psychiatry to conduct individual appointments with patients.
  • The psychiatrist will rotate with other physicians on a roster for evening and weekend coverage of mental health programs.

Qualifications

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.

The individual must qualify to perform duties as a physician, have completed an accredited residency and/or possess experience which has qualified the individual to perform general duties and some specialized functions and procedures without supervision. Staff physicians may also include attendings who train physician residents assigned in facilities with residency training programs, and consultants who are capable of giving authoritative views and opinions on subjects in their field of medicine.

Basic Requirements:

  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
  • Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
  • Completion of residency training, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.
  • Physical Requirements: In Accordance With VA Directive and Handbook 5019

Preferred Characteristic: Board Certified or Board Eligible Psychiatrist
