Duties

Help

As a ACTUARY at the GS-1510-14/15 some of your typical work assignments may include:

  • Providing expert advice and assistance to the DoD Chief Actuary in support of the Under Secretary of Defense (Personnel and Readiness) on all actuarial matters bearing on the current, proposed, or alternative DoD military personnel benefit programs.
  • Applying professional actuarial principles and techniques in the analysis, evaluation, and projection of data with heavy emphasis on pension, survivor benefits, retiree health care, education benefits and other employee benefit plans.
  • Serving as principal advisor to the Chief Actuary on actuarial science as well as assisting in strategic planning and personnel hiring decisions, including recruiting.
  • Providing technical assistance and advice on actuarial matters to others within the Office of the Actuary, other DoD components, and other agencies outside of DoD.
  • Assisting the Chief Actuary with strategic planning, such as ensuring the office's goals and objectives are properly aligned under the DoD / USD(P&R) / DHRA umbrella, and providing actuarial assistance to DoD stakeholders as they adapt to emerging fiscal realities.

Qualifications

You may qualify at the GS-14 , if you fulfill the following qualifications:

One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-13 grade level in the Federal service as listed below:

  • With minimal supervision, developing and actuarially evaluating alternatives, hypotheses, and theories about military benefits in the areas of retirement, survivor benefits, education, retiree health care, and life insurance.
  • With minimal supervision, reviewing and applying professional actuarial principles and techniques in the analysis, evaluation, and projection of data with heavy emphasis on pension, survivor benefits, retiree health care, education benefits and other employee benefit.
You may qualify at the GS-15 , if you fulfill the following qualifications:

One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-14 grade level in the Federal service as listed below:
  • Developing and actuarially evaluating alternatives, hypotheses, and theories about military benefits in the areas of retirement, survivor benefits, education, retiree health care, and life insurance.
  • Reviewing and applying professional actuarial principles and techniques in the analysis, evaluation, and projection of data with heavy emphasis on pension, survivor benefits, retiree health care, education benefits and other employee benefit.
Applicants must also meet the Selective Placement Factor for this announcement:
Selectee must be a current member in either the Society of Actuaries or the Casualty Actuarial Society, either at the Associate or Fellow level, and be able to provide Statements of Actuarial Opinions. Documentation of that certification must be included in the application.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

In addition to meeting qualifications, your application package must reflect the applicable experience to meet the Individual Occupational Requirements for the 1510 series:

One year of actuarial experience equivalent to the next lower grade level;

AND

A course of educational study that includes:A bachelor's degree that included courses in actuarial science, mathematics, relevant statistics, business, finance, economics, insurance, or computer science totaling at least 24 semester hours. This course work must have included a minimum of 12 semester hours of mathematics that included differential and integral calculus and one or more courses in mathematics for which these calculus courses were prerequisites.*NOTE: Failure to provide transcripts will result in you being rated ineligible for this position.

Education

Substitution of education may not be used in lieu of specialized experience for this grade level.

FOREIGN EDUCATION: If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet the qualification requirements, you must show that the education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
