Summary

This position is located on the staff of the Executive Officer for Collections, Exhibitions, and Programs, in the Library’s Technical Services Department.  The primary purpose of this position is to perform a variety of complex duties relating to the cataloging and processing of library materials for the Library’s collection and to the maintenance of bibliographic data in automated library systems.

The incumbent:

  • Locates, creates, and maintains bibliographic information.
  • Searches bibliographic online and print resources for cataloging copy based on information supplied by vendors or library staff.
  • Enters, updates, and revises data to conform to library policy.
  • Transfers cataloging records between bibliographic utilities and the local library system using appropriate computer software.
  • Creates holdings and item-level records for newly cataloged library materials.
  • Updates holdings records to reflect changes to shelving locations as necessary.
  • Performs ongoing and special projects for the review and maintenance of bibliographic data in the Library’s online catalog; evaluates modification requests from Library Reader Services staff and takes appropriate action to resolve conflicts or inconsistencies, making necessary revisions or consulting with catalogers as appropriate.

Qualifications

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Applicants must have a minimum of one year of specialized experience at a level of difficulty and responsibility comparable to the next lower grade or comparable pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private sector.

Candidates must possess at least one year of specialized experience, equivalent in responsibility to the federal GS-6 level, cataloging and processing of library materials for the Library’s collection and to the maintenance of bibliographic data in an automated library systems.

Other Relevant Eligibility Criteria:

Successful candidates must have completed at least a Bachelor’s degree at an accredited college or university, which included a combination of at least 24 semester hours in library science and information technology.

  • Knowledge and ability to use integrated library systems or library service platforms, as well as other basic library-related applications and hardware.

  • Knowledge of library technical services functions, including acquisition, cataloging, and processing of library materials in all formats

  • Knowledge of descriptive and subject cataloging principles and standards and an ability to interpret and prepare machine-readable bibliographic information accurately.

Time-in-Grade: Current Federal employees must meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement to receive consideration under merit promotion procedures.
