As a Hydrologist (Reports Specialist) within the California Water Science Center, some of your specific duties will include:

REVIEW AND APPROVAL OF INFORMATION PRODUCT DATA SYSTEM DOCUMENTS (IPDS):

• Ensures the written description of the methodology employed, as modified by reviews, adheres to Fundamental Science Practices

• Checks that the data and/or text in the document is arranged in a scientifically logical manner

• Determines whether USGS templates have been employed, if appropriate

• Checks that the text is clear and unambiguous and that any graphics accurately depict methodology and result

PROFICIENCY IN HYDROLOGY:

• Applies an advanced level of professional knowledge of a wide range of concepts, principles and practices in the field of hydrology and geology to assist Program Chiefs, project chiefs and authors plan to communicate the results of CASWSC scientific endeavors through appropriate IPDS products.

• Provides informed advice which may require defining problems, establishing working hypotheses, evaluating information with respect to similar or related problems and developing methods and/or procedures for accomplishing the objectives of the project.

SCIENCE COMMUNICATION MANAGEMENT:

• Checks that authors seek appropriate peer, specialists, and/or Program Chief reviews, as dictated by the IPDS processes, and appropriately responds to any comments received

• Assures IPDS product clearly communicates intended science

• Provides update on upcoming high profile publications of interest and assists projects by suggested creative approaches to communicating science through a variety of media products.

• Mentors other CAWSC staff on role of Reports Specialist, and review and approval processes.

Operates a government motor vehicle as an incidental driver.

Are There Any Special Requirements For This Position?

  • Because this position requires travel for official business, the selectee will be required to apply for a charge card within 30 calendar days of appointment.  Individuals who have delinquent account balances from a previous Government charge card will be required to satisfy their existing obligation before a new card can be issued.

    For GS-13:

    In addition to the basic education requirement as stated in the link above, applicants must have one year of appropriate professional experience in hydrology that is equivalent to at least the GS-12 level in the Federal service.

    Examples of such experience include planning, executing and reporting on original hydrologic studies or ongoing hydrologic studies requiring a fresh approach to resolve new problems. The complexity of this work typically required extensive modification and adaptation of standard procedures, methods, and techniques, and the development of totally new methods and techniques to address novel or obscure problems for which guidelines or precedents were not substantially applicable. At this level, Hydrologists have extensive knowledge of the principles of hydrology and highly developed ability in their application, and wide latitude for the exercise of independent judgment to perform scientific work of marked difficulty and responsibility.
