Duties

Help

Responds to all emergency calls and employs appropriate suppression techniques, decontamination methods, extinguishing agents, and equipment required to control and extinguish fires. Responds to hazardous material incidents for the purpose of stopping/controlling the release; i.e., approaches the point of release to plug, patch, or otherwise stop the release and prepares report of incident. Provides life support to include patient baseline vitals and medical history; administers emergency medications if required, stabilizes patient for transport, and prepares reports of incident. Performs fire inspections, maintains firefighting equipment/operations and building compliance, and carries out fire prevention or protection programs. Ensure compliance with local, state and federal fire prevention ordinances and building codes, National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) regulations, writes reports, procedures and plans. Operates emergency control console, monitors fire signals and other communications equipment and, at times, monitors the security alarm system. Drives and operates firefighting and emergency medical apparatus.

Time-in-grade/band requirements must be met by the closing date of the announcement unless eligible for special hiring authority, reinstatement eligible, non-current Federal employee applying as a VEOA eligible which do not require time-in-grade/band.

Qualifications

To qualify for the ZS-IV, applicants must have 52 weeks of specialized experience at the GS-06 level (or ZS-III at NIST). Specialized experience is defined as experience responding to emergency medical, fire, and hazardous calls; performing building and fire inspections; monitoring and operating fire equipment.

IN ADDITION, the applicant MUST be able to meet the following selective placement factor (Screen out): 1) Skill in providing basic life support and emergency medical care as evidenced by a valid Maryland Institute for Emergency Medical Services Systems, EMT-B certificate.

If considered for the position, may be required to provide the following certifications- 

-Ability to respond to a hazardous materials incident at a minimum operational skill level as evidenced by a valid Hazmat Operations Level training certificate.

-Skill in operating fire fighting vehicles to include pumper, hazmat, and ambulance vehicles on federal, state, and local highways as evidenced by a valid Maryland Class "B" driver's license or equivalent.

-Knowledge of basic firefighting techniques and practices as evidenced by a valid Fire Fighter I certification

-Skill in operating fire fighting vehicles with water pump capabilities as evidenced by a valid Maryland Pumps class or equivalent certification.
