Summary

This is a group vacancy for two positions located on the Hoosier National Forest, and the Mark Twain National Forest. Please see the Additional Information section for duty locations and contact information.

The positions will be filled at the GS-5 level with promotion potential to GS-7.

The primary purpose of these positions is to perform a variety of complex and recurring duties in support of wildlife habitat on the assigned unit.

Duties

Help
  • Construct or complete habitat project work such as watershed improvement or restoration work, fencing, and mowing and/or planting areas to improve or create early successional habitat.
  • Assess habitat environments, requirements, and characteristics of fish and wildlife species or populations.
  • Examine information and develop reports of results with suitable recommendations.
  • Gather data for development of fish and wildlife management plans and coordination of fish and wildlife needs for environmental analysis reports.
  • Follow standard procedures to perform field duties such as sampling in streams, or wildlife or plant identification.
  • May perform invasive plant removal as a form of wildlife habitat management.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the eligibility and qualifications requirements as defined below by the closing date of the announcement. For more information on the qualifications for this position, visit the Office of Personnel Management's General Schedule Qualification Standards.

Specialized Experience Requirement:

For the GS-05: You must have one year specialized experience equivalent to the GS-04 in the Federal service. Specialized experience is defined as one or more of the following: Provided technical support in a fish and wildlife management field environment by organizing wildlife-related data; Collected field data on fish and wildlife habitat, species condition, location, and status for habitat management and improvement plans; and/or Maintained records of findings or results of biological science surveys, tests and procedures.

OR a bachelor's degree or 4 years of successfully completed education above high school (120 semester/180 quarter hours). Acceptable disciplines for qualification are: fisheries and/or wildlife ecology, fisheries and/or wildlife management, ichthyology, herpetology, entomology, ornithology, mammalogy, biostatistics. The education must have been obtained in an accredited junior college, college or university with courses related to the occupation of the position;

OR combinations of successfully completed post-high school education (in excess of the first 60 semester/90 quarter hours) and specialized experience. The education must have been obtained in an accredited junior college, college or university with courses related to the occupation of the position.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
