Duties

Help
  • Install and repair large climate controlled systems and direct digital control systems which provide a variety of air conditioning functions.
  • Install and repair a variety of small and domestic heating units and systems.
  • Read blueprints and schematics in order to perform installation and repairs of air conditioning equipment.
  • Utilize various tools and equipment to complete work assignments.
  • Utilize knowledge of the principles and theories of refrigeration, combustion, and heat distribution in the performance of daily tasks.
  • Locate and replace major portions of defective components on all types of refrigeration and heating systems/equipment.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Complete and pass a Tier 1 National Agency Check with Inquiries (NACI) background investigation.
  • This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
  • Must possess or obtain and maintain a valid state driver's license.
  • Must possess or obtain and maintain a Material Handling Equipment (MHE) license.
  • Must possess or obtain and maintain the following certifications: Annual Asbestos Certification, and a Universal Refrigerant Transition and Recovery Certification as required by 40 CFR Part 82, Subpart F.

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

There is no specific length of training or experience required. However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic~ without more than normal supervision. Abilities include: (1) installing and repairing a variety of domestic and commercial refrigeration and-air conditioning units and systems, (2) installing and repairing large and complex heating units and systems composed of high pressure boilers and auxiliary equipment, and (3) diagnosing the cause of faulty air conditioning and heating equipment. - Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

To meet the basic eligibility, you must receive at least two points on the screen-out element indicated above and must have an average of two points on all the job elements listed below. Your application will be further evaluated to determine if you meet the best qualified cut-off for referral to the selecting official.

PHYSICAL EFFORT

Incumbent carries and sets up parts and equipment weighing up to fifty pounds. Works from ladders, scaffolding, and platforms. Required to stand, stoop, stretch, bend, climb, and kneel for prolonged periods while making repairs in hard-to-reach places.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Work is performed inside as well as outdoors in different types of weather. Incumbent is subject to frequent temperature changes and is exposed to gas and smoke, dust, scalding water, fumes, cuts, burns, and electrical shock. Protective devices are provided as required.
