Summary

Physical Demands/Work Environment: Field work is performed outdoors in conditions that include steep and rough terrain, dense vegetation, heavy rains, and insects; to include very steep, wet, muddy, rough, uneven or rocky surfaces; positions require physical exertions, such as, hiking, crouching, and stooping, stretching, reaching, or similar activities. Individuals should be capable of working alone, or with other people, during early morning hours, night, or during the day.

Duties

Help

Forestry Aids and Technicians collect forest and woodland management data regarding location, character, extent, volume, rate of growth, and quality of timber. They inspect and report on timber sale areas to determine compliance with contract requirements. They mark and designate timber to be removed in timber sales or for use disposals. They may be on call for emergency fire suppression and mop up work.

Qualifications

In order to be rated as qualified for this position, we must be able to determine that you meet the specialized experience requirement - please be sure to include this information in your resume.

You must meet the qualification requirements to be found qualified. 
 
GS-04: 6 months of general and 6 months of specialized work experience. Examples of specialized experience may include participating in forestry inventory, timber sales, and trespass, cruising and road layout projects; and marking timber in accordance with simple specifications and marking rules; OR successful completion of 2 years of study above the high school level that included at least 12 semester hours (or 18 quarter hours) in any combination of courses such as forestry, agriculture, crop or plant science, range management or conservation, wildlife management, watershed management, soil science, natural resources (except marine fisheries and oceanography), outdoor recreation management, civil or forest engineering, or wildland fire science. No more than 3 semester hours in mathematics is creditable; OR a combination of experience and education to meet the total experience. 

GS-05: one year of specialized work experience equivalent to GS-4 level. Examples of specialized experience may include assisting in inspecting cutover areas on current sales for compliance with terms of timber sales contracts; assisting in investigating suspected timber trespass cases including locating and identifying trespass sites, quantities, etc.; and examining timber stands to determine need for insect and disease control work; OR successful completion a full 4 year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor’s degree (a) with major study in forestry, range management, agriculture, or a subject-matter field directly related to the position, or (b) that included at least 24 semester hours in any combination of courses such as forestry, agriculture, crop or plant science, range management or conservation, wildlife management, watershed management, soil science, natural resources (except marine fisheries and oceanography), outdoor recreation management, civil or forest engineering, or wildland fire science. No more than 6 semester hours in mathematics is creditable; OR a combination of experience and education to meet the total experience. 

GS-06: one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-5 level. Examples of specialized experience may include collecting and compiling forest and woodland management data regarding location, character, extent, volume, rate of growth and quality of timber; designating timber to be removed in timber sales or for use disposal; and preparing reports on forest and woodland trespass cases; OR one year of graduate level education directly related to the work of a Forestry Technician such as forestry, range management, agriculture, or a subject matter field directed related to the position; OR a combination of experience and education to meet the total experience. 

GS-07: one year of specialized work experience equivalent to GS-6 level. Examples of specialized experience may include assisting professional foresters by gathering a variety of resource information for the forestry portion of resource analysis and management planning documents; researching and drafting assigned segments of documents; administering limited timber sales contracts; and preparing forest road layouts; OR one year of graduate level education directly related to the work of a Forestry Technician such as forestry, range management, agriculture, or a subject matter field directed related to the position; OR A combination of experience and education to meet the total experience.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

You must meet all qualification requirements by the closing date of the announcement.

How you will be evaluated

You will be evaluated for this job based on how well you meet the qualifications above.

Upon receipt of your complete application package, a review of your application will be made to ensure you meet the basic qualification requirements.  Your rating will be based on your responses to the Job Specific Questionnaire and the information stated in your resume. If you meet the qualification requirements, your application will be placed in one of three categories:  Best Qualified, Well Qualified, or Qualified.  Within these categories, applicants eligible for veteran's preference will receive selection priority over non-veterans.    In addition, interviews may be conducted for this position.  The interviews may be conducted on a pass/fail basis or may be scored.  The job specific questions relate to the following knowledge, skills and abilities required to do the work of this position.

GS-04

  1. Basic knowledge of the processes, rules, procedures and techniques used to perform various forestry technician duties to assist with the development, protection, and improvement of forests and woodlands. 
  2. Knowledge and ability to use engineer’s transit, GPS and other instruments and common hand tools.
  3. Numerical and technical scientific skill in making accurate readings and notes, in recognizing inconsistencies, and in reporting conditions. 

 
GS-05/06/07

  1. Knowledge of the principles of forest management and pertinent guidelines to complete a variety of forest management projects.
  2. Knowledge of tree identification and cruising techniques, scaling rules and appraisal system to do forest inventory.
  3. Knowledge on data collections, accuracy, determines causes of variances and applicability of data to the overall forest management program.
