The Directorate for Education and Human Resources (EHR) has the mission of developing a diverse workforce ready to advance the frontiers of science and engineering for society, and growing and sustaining a public literate in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). EHR accomplishes its mission through supporting the development of the careers of scientists, engineers, and science educators; building knowledge through research and development; and transforming institutions to better prepare a diverse STEM workforce and science-literate society.

In the EHR Office of the Assistant Director (OAD), the Science Analyst is responsible for a wide spectrum of duties that support EHR's mission including scientific and technical support for the Assistant Director (AD), the Deputy Assistant Director (DAD), and other OAD staff. The Science Analyst will prepare reports, analyses and presentations that inform decisions made by EHR management. These activities will involve day-to-day interactions with the staff throughout NSF and with other federal government research and education organizations and coordinating groups. The position will report to the DAD.

I.                 MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Major duties for the Science Analyst include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Use the databases and sources of information necessary to support the activities of OAD.
  • Research and synthesize disparate information into succinct, coherent work products that are completed in a timely manner, often with very short deadlines.
  • Assist in the creation of effective communications, both oral and written, for a variety of audiences.
  • Collaborate collegially in OAD, EHR, NSF, and other federal groups as assigned.
  • On behalf of EHR, participate in other NSF and interagency activities related to STEM education.
  • Assist the AD and the DAD in the successful implementation of EHR's mission.

II.              Knowledge Required for the Position

  • The Science Analyst should be knowledgeable in an area of science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM) or STEM education.
  • The Science Analyst should understand the missions of EHR and NSF and the general mechanisms by which both accomplish their missions.
  • The Science Analyst must be able to research a STEM, STEM education, or policy issue and provide informed briefing materials for the AD, DAD and Senior Advisor.
  • Proficiency in communication and strong collaboration skills are essential. The Staff Analyst must be able to communicate and interact with program directors, senior leaders, and executives throughout the Foundation and with people at other agencies, and must be skilled/experienced in working both independently and interdependently with others.
  • The Science Analyst must know how to work with a variety of materials, adapt to changing expectations, and meet tight deadlines.

Qualifications

Candidates must have a Ph.D. in a STEM field; a Master’s degree in a STEM field plus after award of the degree, two or more years of successful research, research administration, and/or managerial experience pertinent to the position.

This position is outside the competitive civil service.

  1. In-depth knowledge and expertise in specialty areas of engineering and/or basic science, engineering and/or science education, and science policy with the ability to gather, evaluate, analyze and synthesize technical and scientific information.
  2. Ability to compile, collect, arrange and organize data to prepare tables, charts, graphs, summaries, and other materials for effective presentation of research results and for inclusion in publications.
  3. Knowledge of computer systems, methods and applications, including application of commercial statistical and data management software packages for data base management, compilation and processing data, statistical analysis of data, and/or the novel use of software tools for business process innovation.
  4. Excellent written and oral communication skills to interact with STEM Professionals in various organizations.
  5. Ability to present highlights of cutting edge science and engineering education research that is understandable for the general public, with experience using social media particularly encouraged.
