Summary

This position will be located at the Durham Field Office of the Region 9 State & Private Forestry Group in Durham, NH. This position will be filled from this announcement at the GS-11 grade level with promotion potential to GS-12.

The primary purpose of this position is to perform a variety of professional plant pathology tasks.

Duties

Help
  • Plan, coordinate and conduct evaluation surveys on Federal, State, Tribal, and private lands to determine the status of forest pathogens.
  • Analyze data and prepare complete and comprehensive reports.
  • Make recommendations on forest pathogen management methods.
  • Develop specific biological recommendations based on research findings and experience.
  • Participate in pathogen suppression and prevention projects to reduce the adverse effects of a pathogen on forest resources.
  • Make recommendations on proven reforestation, harvesting, and silvicultural practices which are designed to reduce loss.
  • Plan and conduct training of Federal, State, Tribal, and private land managers in the identification of injurious pathogens, the damage they cause, evaluation techniques and the fundamentals of loss prevention using sound forest management practices.
  • When assigned, plan and organize laboratory and field experiments.

Qualifications

Basic Requirement:

GS-0434 Plant Pathologist Series:
Degree: Plant pathology; or a related scientific discipline that included at least 20 semester hours in basic botany or plant science, and 10 semester hours in plant pathology.

Courses in botany, plant physiology, plant taxonomy, plant pathology, agronomy, forestry, horticulture, or similar subjects may be used to meet the 20-semester-hour requirement in basic botany or plant science. To meet the specific 10-semester-hour requirement in plant pathology, the courses must have been in plant pathology, or have dealt with specific subject matter areas of plant pathology such as those concerned with viruses, fungal or bacterial diseases, host-plant relationships, biotic or chemical controls, environmental or physiological diseases, parasitic diseases, etc.

Graduate education must have been in plant pathology, or in one of the recognized subject-matter fields of plant pathology, or have followed a curriculum or pattern of training that placed major emphasis on plant pathology or one of the recognized subject-matter fields of plant pathology, such as those dealing with particular types of pathogens, diseases of particular kinds of crops, or chemical or biological controls. Graduate study in related fields such as microbiology, entomology, plant physiology, genetics, agronomy, horticulture, forestry, or chemistry may also be qualifying, provided it placed a sufficient amount of emphasis on plant pathology.

In addition to meeting the basic requirement, you must also possess experience and/or directly related education in the amounts listed below.

Specialized Experience Requirement:

For the GS-11: You must have one year specialized experience equivalent to the GS-09 level in the Federal service. Specialized experience is defined as one or more of the following: Conducted evaluation surveys to determine the status of forest pathogens; Analyzed plant pathogen data and prepared initial reports; Participated in forest disease prevention and/or suppression projects; and/or Assisted in conducting training in the identification and management of harmful forest pathogens.

OR Three years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree with related coursework.

OR an appropriate combination of specialized experience and graduate level education (beyond what is required for a master's degree, i.e., more than 36 semester hours leading to a Ph.D.).

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
