Summary

Note: This position is considered virtual for those in the ECHCS, however you will be expected to travel to Clinics with in the ECHCS to do conduct clinics and do work in the community. You will also be required to do work in at Rocky Mountain Regional VA Medical Center.

Help

The incumbent is administratively responsible for the clinical programming and daily operations of the program. Develops policies and procedures for program operation and prepares reports and statistics for facility, VISN, and national use. The incumbent may be responsible for the program's budget and various control points assigned to the program within the assigned areas. The incumbent manages and controls the use of data related to these programs regarding day to day functioning and program evaluation. In conjunction with the Service Chief, plans, organizes and directs administrative, operational, caregiver, Veteran and personnel activities for the service. The Caregiver Support Coordinator has experience that demonstrates the advanced practice skill level in social work. At least two years experience should be in an area of specialized social work practice. The incumbent must be a License Clinical Social Worker, licensed by a state to practice at the advanced practice level. The incumbent will function in support of caregivers, Veterans and family members throughout the medical center and in community settings. The Caregiver Support Coordinator is practicing at the advanced level and has specialized knowledge of practice that can be differentiated from the independent practice social worker by the ability to expand clinical knowledge in the profession, administer a facility program, provide consultation and guidance to colleagues, role model effective social work practice skills, teach or provide orientation to less experienced social workers, develop innovations in practice interventions, and provide clinical supervision for social work licensure or certification. The incumbent in this position requires advanced knowledge and understanding of the services and benefits available for caregivers from both federal, state and private sector resources. As an advanced practice level clinical social worker the incumbent is assigned to work with multiple VA healthcare services and with community agencies, leaders and organizations where he/she has no access to social work clinical supervision. The incumbent is responsible for developing and establishing linkages and collaborates on VA caregiver support efforts with community healthcare and social service agencies. The incumbent is administratively responsible and accountable for the clinical and program development and effectiveness of the facility Caregiver Support Program.

Work Schedule: 0700-1800. Actual tour will be dependent on the needs of the program and service. This position is considered virtual within the Eastern Colorado VA encashment area.

Basic Requirements:

Citizenship. United States Citizen

Education. Have a master's degree in social work from a school of social work fully accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE). Graduates of schools of social work that are in candidacy status do not meet this requirement until the school of social work is fully accredited. A doctoral degree in social work may not be substituted for the master's degree in social work. Verification of the degree can be made by going to the CSWE website to verify if that social work degree meets the accreditation standards for a master of social work.

Licensure. Persons hired or reassigned to social worker positions in the GS-185 series in VHA must be licensed or certified by a state to independently practice social work at the master's degree level. Current state requirements may be found on the OHRM website. Individuals assigned as social worker program coordinator must be licensed or certified at the advanced practice level and must be able to provide supervision for licensure.

GS-12 Social Worker Program Coordinators. Program coordinators at the GS-12 grade are administratively responsible for a clinical program providing treatment to patients in a major specialty, i.e., Suicide Prevention. They may be the sole practitioner in this specialty at the facility and typically provide direct patient care services in the program area. They manage the daily operation of the program, develop policies and procedures for program operation, and prepare reports and statistics for facility, VISN, and national use. They may be responsible for the program's budget. Individuals assigned as social worker program coordinator must be licensed at the advanced practice level. Experience must demonstrate possession of advanced practice skills and judgment, demonstrating progressively more professional competency. They may have certification or other post-master's degree training for a nationally recognized professional organization or university that includes a defined curriculum/course of study and internship, or equivalent supervised professional experience. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the professional KSAs shown below.

Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  1. Ability to supervise multidisciplinary staff assigned to the program.
  2. Skill in organizing work, setting priorities, meeting multiple deadlines, and evaluating assigned program area(s)
  3. Ability to provide training, orientation, and guidance within clinical practice.
  4. Knowledge of program coordination and administration which includes consultation, negotiation, and monitoring.
  5. Knowledge and ability to write policies, procedures, and/or practice guidelines for the program.
The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-12.

Physical Requirements: The work is sedentary. Typically, the employee sits comfortably while working. However, there may be some light exertion required when walking; standing, bending or climbing stairs, carrying of light items such as papers, books, small objects, or driving an automobile. Employee must have valid driver's license, as some of the duties will require community outreach, and the ability to work from various VA ECHCS clinic locations. No special physical demands are required to perform the work. Ability to complete a Basic Life Support (BLS) course is a position requirement.
