Duties

Help

An associate program officer is involved in a range of activities which include, for example, long-range planning and budget development for the areas of science represented by the program or program cluster, administration of the merit review process and proposal recommendations, preparation of written material describing advances in the research supported, and liaison with other NSF programs, Federal agencies and organizations.

Promote a healthy balance of support for all the needs of the research enterprise either through program, division, directorate, Foundation, or interagency activities.

Provide scientific evaluation and advice for other programs in NSF, including international and cross-directorate programs.

Apply professional knowledge to develop the technical capabilities of assessment and evaluation, including information technology development tool development and data selection, collection, analysis, and reporting, and oversight and execution of assessment and evaluation implementation.

Prepare well-written materials that are consistent with NSF and ENG strategic goals and core strategies to inform ENG stakeholders, including Administration and Congress, the national science and engineering community and the general public, of the intent, impact and promise of ENG programmatic investments.

Interface with senior Engineering leadership in developing cross-directorate partnerships to accomplish goals.

Use strong technical skills in computer science to provide ENG program portfolio information to ENG stakeholders.

Represent the Program, Division and Foundation, within the scientific community, with other NSF Divisions, other agencies and organizations, and the public, accurately reflecting NSF policy and positions.

Create and maintain linkages to other NSF units and other Federal agencies in pursuit of the overall NSF mission.

Participate in staff, panel, committee and other meetings, providing input relevant to Program area and/or Division.

Is responsive to assignment on special projects and temporary functional learns from across the Foundation to solve problems, improve staff communication, and effect coordination.

Contribute ideas and effort to improving the quality of policies and NSF's performance of the overall mission. Provide information to the community on how NSF is pursuing its mission and gather data and impressions from the community on the effectiveness of NSF's performance of its mission.

Qualifications

Candidates must have a Ph.D. degree in Engineering, Physical Sciences or Biological Sciences plus after award of the Ph.D., four or more years of successful research, research administration, and/or managerial experience pertinent to the position; OR a Master's Degree in Engineering, Physical Sciences or Biological Sciences plus after award of the degree, six or more years of successful research, research administration, and/or managerial experience pertinent to the position.

This position is outside the competitive civil service.

Education

Education may enhance skills required for this position; however, no substitution of education for specialized experience may be made at this level.

Additional information

Relocation expenses will NOT be paid.
