THIS IS A MULTIDISCIPLINARY POSITION AND CAN BE FILLED WITH ONE OF THE FOLLOWING OCCUPATIONS :

PHYSICIAN/DENTIST: SR-602/SR-680, $145,000 - $304,750
NOTE: For Physician or Dentist - Applicant's education and length of practice (experience) will be considered by a Compensation Panel in determining the salary of the applicant selected. Exceptions to the salary cap must be approved.

The Department of Veterans Affairs offers Permanent Change of Station (PCS) relocation services. VHA Medical Centers provide a wide range of services including traditional hospital-based services such as surgery, critical care, mental health, orthopedics, pharmacy, radiology, and physical therapy. In addition, most of our medical centers offer additional medical and surgical specialty services including audiology & speech pathology, dermatology, dental, geriatrics, neurology, oncology, podiatry, prosthetics, urology, and vision care. Some medical centers also offer advanced services such as organ transplants and plastic surgery.

The Medical Center Director is responsible to the Veterans Integrated Service Network (VISN) Director. The position requires the effective and economical direction, control, and operation of the VA Medical Center (VAMC). The responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Fosters positive relations with the news media, Congressional staff, service organizations, and volunteer groups.
  • Develops and maintains cooperative relationships with other Federal government agencies, local and state governments, community organizations and other health care providers in VAMC's service area.
  • Determines program goals and objectives, and develops short-range and long-range plans for achieving strategic direction consistent with the VISN, VHA, and VA Strategic, Performance and Operating goals.
  • Establishes VAMC policies and procedures consistent with the VISN, Veterans Health Administration, (VHA), and VA corporate guidelines.
  • Makes final decisions which have a direct and substantial impact on the healthcare organization and programs. Such decisions affect the nature, scope, and quality of patient care programs and activities.
  • Full delegated line authority and responsibility for executive level management of the VAMC. Overall responsibility for planning, organizing, coordinating, controlling, reviewing, evaluating, and improving medical, administrative, and support operations of the medical facility.

Basic Requirements For Dentist:

  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Degree of doctor of dental surgery or dental medicine resulting from a course of education in dentistry. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
  • Current, full and unrestricted license to practice dentistry in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. Provide proof of this license in the application package.
  • Completion of an approved residency program in general practice or specialty, or comparable experience as a dentist actively involved in treating medically compromised patients.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.
  • Physical requirements: See VA Directive and Handbook 5019.
Basic Requirements For Physician:

  • Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
  • Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. Provide proof of this license in the application package.
  • Completion of residency training, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.

Requirements

Physicians and Dentists appointed as Directors of Medical Centers (including facility and Regional Office Center Directors, Directors of Outpatient Clinics (Independent) and Domiciliaries) must meet the requirements specified in 38 U.S.C. § 7306. The individual assigned at this level will be a qualified doctor of medicine with demonstrated leadership ability.

The Medical Facility Director (includes Directors of outpatient clinics (independent) and domiciliaries) has overall responsibility for planning, organizing, directing, coordinating and controlling medical, administrative, and supporting operations of a medical facility which administers a variety of medical care and treatment for a large geographic area. The Director is responsible for maintaining and improving health care facility and VA relationships through personal, active participation in the administrative, educational, community and social events of Federal, State, local and other affiliated organizations involved in health care delivery, Veterans service organizations, and appropriate civic organizations. These duties are geared to successful accomplishment of the basic patient care mission, as well as such additional missions as teaching and research.

In addition to basic requirements, the following technical and executive core qualifications are required for this position. Typically, these qualifications would be gained through education, experience and training which reflect progressive development and achievement in responsible management/executive level assignments in health care at a national or Network level, equivalent positions in a hospital/network/regional office or allied medical care facility, or executive positions in an academic institution. An individual's total experience and education must demonstrate the ability to perform the duties of the position. If you are currently a federal employee, this type of experience is typically found at positions at the GS-15 level and above.

B. TECHNICAL QUALIFICATIONS (TQ):
TQ: Knowledge of mission, organization, programs, and requirements of health care delivery systems, and the ability to manage and direct a large health care facility.
