Duties

Help
  • Oversees design, development, integration, test, evaluation, operation, and long-term sustaining of systems and/or payload hardware, mechanisms, ground support equipment, and associated systems and performs technical analyses.
  • Develops/integrates flight vehicle systems and elements, to include resolution of issues on all aspects of development and operation, i.e. system performance, configuration, component definition, operational capabilities, reliability, and safety.
  • Reviews flight data and/or test data of the spacecraft system hardware, software, and interfaces to detect inefficiencies, propose improvements, and ensure safety while accomplishing mission objectives.
  • Participates with customers in requirements development; analyzes requirements and design criteria, develops cost estimates, assures validation of requirements, and evaluates schedules and the feasibility of project accomplishment.
  • Develops and assesses advanced control system algorithms and technologies for implementation in launch vehicles, spacecraft, and advanced aerospace systems.
  • Builds and maintains technical expertise in spacecraft systems for use in supporting NASA programs and partnerships and effectively communicates this expertise, in writing and orally, with all levels of NASA Management.
  • Duties described above are for full-performance level. Duties assigned at a lower grade level will be of more limited scope, performed with less independence and limited complexity; duties will be commensurate with the grade of selected employee.

Qualifications

In addition to the Basic Education Requirement, you must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade (GS-13), which has equipped you with the particular competencies needed to successfully perform the duties of the position described above.

To qualify for the GS-11:

One year of specialized experience at least equivalent in difficulty and responsibility to GS-09 level work in the Federal service is defined as professional experience working with multi-disciplinary engineering and scientific concepts, methods, and processes related to aerospace propulsion, fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, thermal, orbit mechanics, applied physics and/or materials and structures as they apply to aerospace propulsions systems and/or experience that demonstrates application of engineering disciplines sufficient to accomplish flight systems-engineering functions.

OR

Completion of all requirements for a doctoral degree (Ph.D. or equivalent) in an appropriate field;

OR

Completion of three full academic years of graduate education in an appropriate field;

OR

An equivalent combination of experience and graduate education described above.

To qualify for the GS-12:

One year of specialized experience at least equivalent in difficulty and responsibility to GS-11 level work in the Federal service is defined as professional experience planning and conducting experimental studies into fluid mechanics and thermal problems applicable to propulsion/power systems, aerospace systems, or flight vehicles and/or developing detailed test plans and procedures, monitoring tests, interpreting and analyzing data, and reporting results applicable to propulsion/power systems, aerospace systems, or flight vehicles.

To qualify for the GS-13:

One year of specialized experience at least equivalent in difficulty and responsibility to GS-12 level work in the Federal service is defined as professional experience analyzing complex issues or problems involving detailed test plans and procedures, test monitoring, data interpretation/analyses, and results reporting; Experience working with high-level professional and non-professional personnel at all technical and managerial levels providing both oral and written feedback (e.g., technical, cost and scheduling aspects) involving fluid mechanics and thermal problems applicable to propulsion/power systems, aerospace systems, or flight vehicles.

Education

In order to qualify for this position you must meet Basic Education Requirement

Applicants must have successfully completed an undergraduate or graduate degree with a major in either a) engineering from a college or university that has ABET accredited engineering programs or b) Physical Science, Mathematics, Life Science, Computer Science*, Other fields of science.

Required college majors for applicants qualifying on the basis of graduate education only: Aeronautical Engineering, Aeronautics, Aerospace Engineering, Astronautics, Chemistry, Applied Mechanics, Engineering Mechanics, Mechanical Engineering, Nuclear Engineering, Nuclear Engineering Physics, Physics, Applied Physics, Engineering Physics. Other majors will qualify if the major includes or is supplemented as follows: Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Applied Mathematics (or other field), if the major includes or is supplemented by one course in thermodynamics, nuclear physics, rocket propulsion fundamentals, gas dynamics or modem or molecular physics; Astronautical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Pure Mathematics (or other related field), if includes or is supplemented by nine semester hours (or the equivalent) in physics, thermodynamics, chemistry or closely related fields.

*Note: Curriculum must include 30 semester hours of course work in a combination of mathematics, statistics and computer science. Of the 30 semester hours, 15 must be in any combination of statistics and mathematics which includes differential and integral calculus.

Degrees in engineering technology are not considered to be qualifying for this position.
