About the Position: Serves as Natural Resources Specialist (Park Ranger) located at DeGray Lake Field Office under general supervision of the Supervisory Ranger at the Lake Office. Duties

Help
  • Serves as a Team Leader of the Natural Resource Management Staff at the Lake. Assigns and explains work requirements to subordinate team members for new or changed programs, functions, goals and processes.
  • Oversees the conservation, preservation, restoration and use of all Lake natural resources.
  • Plans and oversees construction for the rehabilitation of campsites, picnic sites, roads and associated structures in the recreation areas.
  • Responsible for the administration, direction, management and control of the interpretive programs for visitors to the Lake.
  • Explains to the visiting public conditions prevailing within the project area, its purpose and association with other programs, rules and regulations affecting use of facilities.
  • Provides expertise in the management of a water resource project as it pertains to the operation of project owned levees and privately operated levee districts in conjunction with daily duties.
  • Periodically reviews and inspects each phase of the Natural Resource Management Program, taking necessary corrective action where improvements need to be made and provide verbal and written reports and recommendations to supervisor.

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Basic Requirement for Natural Resources Specialist (Park Ranger):

A. Degree: Bachelor's degree (or higher degree) in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position.

OR

B. Combination of Education and Experience: Courses equivalent to a major, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below:

Specialized Experience

One year of specialized experience which includes (1) experience developing plans for the conservation, preservation and use of a project's natural resources; (2) experience overseeing the operation, maintenance and development of a recreation facility; and (3) recreation and park administration, public education and interpretation, visitor assistance, volunteer coordination and public safety. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the second lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-09).

OR

Education: Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree or 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position.

OR

Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the second year (total graduate semester hours minus 36) by 18. Add the two percentages.

Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-9).

Education

FOREIGN EDUCATION: If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet the qualification requirements, you must show the education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
