Summary

This position is located in the Kayenta Service Unit, Division of Nursing Services, Sterile Processing Department, Kayenta, Arizona. The purpose of this position is to perform a variety of task necessary for the processing of sterile supplies for distribution.

Help

Incumbent works under the supervision of the Ambulatory Surgical Nurse Supervisor.

  • Operating sterilizers or equipment or when using disinfectant solutions
  • Disassembling and reassembling equipment instrument trays
  • Quality testing completed daily and weekly on washers and sterilizers
  • Routinely checks dates and indicators
  • Collects used equipment supplies from patient care areas for decontamination and reprocessing
  • Receives, disassembles, and inspects for damage, reusable medical supplies, instruments and equipment
  • Determines correct method for pre-sterilizing
  • Exercises appropriate infection control precautions when handling contaminated articles
  • Exchange and restock Central Supply carts

This is a designated position covered by Public Law 101-630, requiring contact or control over Indian children. Upon tentative selection, selectee will be requested to complete, sign, and submit the Addendum to OF-306, Child Care & Indian Child Care Worker Position form. Due to this requirement, the agency must ensure that persons hired for these positions have not been found guilty of or pleaded nolo contendere or guilty to certain crimes.

Measles and Rubella immunization required for selectees born after 1957. Seasonal Influenza immunization is required for civilian health care facility staff working in Indian Health Service health care facilities.

Incumbent works on a regularly assigned rotating shift to provide continuity of operating room Sterile Processing Department tasks during evening, nights, weekends, and holidays.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, your resume must state sufficient experience and/or education, to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are applying.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer and part time experience. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.

For positions requiring positive education requirements, or if you are using education to meet all or part of the qualification requirements, you MUST submit a copy of your transcripts or an itemized list of college courses which includes equivalent information from the transcript (course title, semester/quarter hours, and grade/degree earned) in your resume.

BASIC REQUIREMENT(S):
GS-05: Candidate must have completed 52 weeks of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-4 grade level to qualify for the GS-5 level; or must have 4-year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor's degree with courses related to the occupation.

GS-06: Candidate must have completed 52 weeks of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-5 grade level to qualify for the GS-6 level.

Specialized Experience: Experience in processing, assembling, trouble-shooting, preparing, sterilizing, storing, and issuing sterile and unsterile medical supplies and equipment. The applicant must possess knowledge of the technical names, general uses, physical characteristics, and operating conditions of medical supply items; knowledge of decontamination, cleaning, preparation, sterilization, and storage procedures; knowledge of aseptic techniques; and skill in operating a washer-sterilizer, ultrasonic instrument cleaners, and gas and steam sterilizers. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include work as an operating room technician, medical instrument technician, nursing assistant, corpsman, or laboratory worker. At GS-05: Specialized experience is experience in processing, assembling, trouble-shooting, preparing, sterilizing, storing, and issuing sterile and unsterilized medical supplies and equipment. At GS-06: Specialized experience is experience in utilizing technical names, general uses and physical characteristics of supplies and equipment, and operating conditions of medical supply items; experience in decontamination, cleaning, preparation, sterilization, and storage procedures; experience in aseptic techniques and operating a washer-sterilizer, ultrasonic instrument cleaners, and gas and stem sterilizers.

NOTE: Graduate education or an internship meets the specialized experience required above GS-5 only in those instances where it is directly related to the work of the position.

You must meet all qualification requirements within 30 days of the closing date of the announcement. Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade Requirements: Merit Promotion (status) candidates must have completed one year of service at the next lower grade level. Time-In-Grade provisions do not apply under the Excepted Service Examining Plan (ESEP).

This position has promotion potential to the GS-06 grade level. Promotion to the next grade level is at management's discretion and is based on your demonstrated ability to perform the higher level duties, the continuing need for the higher level duties, and "Regulatory/Administrative" approval. Promotion to the next higher grade level is not guaranteed and no promise of promotion is implied.
