The Supervisory Medical Instrument Technologist has the overall responsibility to the coordination and performance of the ultrasound section.

Functional Statement: The incumbent of this position works in the ultrasound section of imaging services at the VAPACS Facility, reports to the Chief Technologist or designee. The Supervisory Medical Instrument Technologist has the overall responsibility to the coordination and performance of the ultrasound section.
Work Schedule: Various tours of duty which may include day, evening, nights, weekends, holidays and on-calls. Coverage at various outpatient VA clinics is also required, as needed. Management reserves the right to determine and/or change the tour of duty.
The incumbent works under the supervision of the Chief Radiologic Technologist, Chief Radiology Administrator and Chief, Radiology Service. Works independently but confers with radiologists and supervisors on more difficult problems. Work is spot-checked for achievement of objectives. The incumbent independently plans and carries out the procedures necessary to complete the work assignment and handles problems and corrects errors in accordance with established protocols or accepted laboratory practices.
The major duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Performs ultrasound examinations of the abdomen, neck and thyroid/parathyroid, extremities, pelvic/transvaginal, testicle, retroperitoneal space, renal transplant, evaluation of the body wall for hernia and other indications. The acquisition of high-quality examinations in multiple areas of ultrasound technology assists in the diagnosis and treatment of patient medical disorders.
Makes multiple simultaneous setting changes and adjustments in operation of equipment to ensure optimal and accurate results. Based on the quality of ultrasound exam, determines if additional ultrasonic imagining/procedures are necessary to yield definitive diagnostic findings.
Confers with radiologists to determine requirements for non-standard exams. Determines technical factors, positioning, etc. to produce and satisfy requirements of the ultrasound scanning. Provides additional images, when deemed necessary by the technologist, to ensure adequate information for unexpected findings.
Advises Radiologists, of significant abnormalities that require their immediate attention and/or visualization while the patient is undergoing examination, before they leave the department.
Develops, maintains, and explains patient prep procedures so that the patient and/or ward or outpatient staff understands the proper preparations for ultrasound examinations in an effort to minimize delays of examinations. These preps are discussed either by written preparation information or by telephone conversation and coordinated through nursing when appropriate.
Maintains records and files of exams performed on patients. This includes patient electronic records, exam requisitions, and registering and/or editing of patient exams in the Radiology Information System (RIS) and the sending/retrieving of images in the Picture Archiving Computer System (PACS)
Experience in JCAHO readiness preparation
Develops and maintains an on-call schedule for Ultrasound Technologists, in accordance to polices mandated by the facilities complexity level.

Physical Requirements: Light lifting (under 15 pounds); moderate carrying (15-44 pounds); straight pulling (1-2 hours); pushing (3-4 hours); reaching above shoulder; use of fingers and both hands required; walking (6-7 hours); standing (3-4 hours); kneeling (1-2 hours); repeated bending (3-4 hours); near vision correctable at 13" to 16" to Jaeger 1 to 4; far vision correctable in one eye to 20/20 and to 20/40 in the other; depth perception; ability to distinguish basic colors; and hearing (aid permitted). The environmental factors for this position are: working closely with others and/or alone; protracted or irregular hours; and unusual emotional strain.
Qualifications

Basic Requirements:
United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
Certification: Registration by Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI) or by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) is highly desirable. Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certifications are also desirable.
English Language Proficiency. All Diagnostic Radiologic Technologists must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d) and 7404(d).
May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation).
Experience. At least 1 year of experience comparable to the next lower grade level, which is directly related to the duties of the position to be filled, and must fully meet the KSAs at that level.
In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following technical KSAs:
Advanced knowledge of complex and non-standard treatment and examination procedures and techniques.
Ability to plan and assist in the establishment of a completely integrated treatment and examination program.
Ability to evaluate new products and equipment and make recommendations concerning developments which would improve operations.
Ability to manage the fiscal matters of the functions supervised (which would include fund controls, contracts, and equipment expenditures), forecast resource and equipment needs, and administer the allocated budget.
Knowledge of and ability to provide the full range of supervisory duties which would include responsibility for assignment of work to be performed; performance evaluation; selection of staff; and recommendation of awards, advancements, and, when appropriate, disciplinary actions.
Grade Determinations:
In addition to the core competencies defined at the GS-9 level, positions at this grade may be supervisory or non-supervisory with specialized advanced knowledge and assignments.
