Summary

The student nurse technician (SNT) performs basic nursing care for patients in the VA Fayetteville Veterans Affairs Medical Center. Duties

Help

The incumbent Student Nurse Technician is responsible for providing safe, effective care
to inpatients on a busy medical/surgical/telemetry ward. Activities will include bathing,
personal hygiene, removal of waste products, assisting with feeding, taking-recording and reporting
vital signs accurately, assisting ambulation and other duties of care as directed
by Registered Nurses, Licensed Practical Nurses or providers. She/he observes patients
who may be confused or have other cognitive issues and reports to nurse when condition
changes. Incumbent initiates emergency action in life threatening situations such as
cardiac and/or respiratory arrest, massive bleeding, shock, or assaultive behavior by
alerting licensed personnel immediately. Incumbent will document vital signs and
activities of daily living in the electronic record or paper record during contingency.
Hours are varied and include weekends and holidays. The incumbent reports to the
Program Coordinator and/or Nurse Manger of assigned unit. The incumbent must possess excellent communication skills and demonstrate expertise in customer service.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, you must have completed or will have completed the first semester in an accredited nursing program prior to the entrance on duty.

United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit
qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.

Enrolled in a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State agency and
accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the
applicant.; The National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) OR The Commission
of Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE).

Physical Requirements: This position requires visual acuity, keen hearing, clear distinctive speech,
and manual dexterity. This position requires potentially long periods of continued walking, standing
stooping, sitting, bending pulling and pushing. Transferring patients and objects may be required.
Mechanical inpatient equipment are provided. The incumbent may be exposed to infected patients and
contaminated materials and may be required to don protective clothing in insolation situations,
operative/invasive procedures, or home settings. The incumbent may occasionally be exposed to
patients who are combative secondary to delirium, dementia, or psychiatric disorders. The incumbent
must be a mature, flexible, sensible individual capable to working effectively in difficult situations,
able to shift priorities based on patient needs. Must complete annual Employee Health requirements,
such as annual TB screening or testing, as a condition of employment.
