Help

As a Chemist within the Central Energy Resources Science Center, some of your specific duties will include:

  • Conducting geochemical analyses of samples submitted to the PGRL project.
  • Ensuring that data from these processes are maintained and archived in the Laboratory.
  • Preparing samples for analysis using established methods (e.g., column chromatography, Soxhlet extraction).
  • Collaborating effectively and works as part of a multidisciplinary team of geologists, geochemists, physical scientists and managers.
  • Maintaining documentation as required by the PGRL Project (such as an instrument logbook, maintenance logs, and a scientific notebook).
  • Preparing and submitting documentation that describe the analyses and data processing.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Work requires standing for long periods of time in a laboratory environment. Work commonly requires  exertion in the preparation of samples and running analyses.

 WORK ENVIRONMENT

Work is primarily performed in a laboratory setting, and involves regular and recurring exposure to  irritant, toxic, and corrosive chemicals, as well as high‐voltage electrical instruments. Special safety  precautions and training are required, and the incumbent uses protective clothing and gear such as a  laboratory coat, gloves, and safety glasses.

Are There Any Special Requirements For This Position?

  • Because this position requires travel for official business, the selectee will be required to apply for a charge card within 30 calendar days of appointment.  Individuals who have delinquent account balances from a previous Government charge card will be required to satisfy their existing obligation before a new card can be issued.

Qualifications

Applicants must meet A or B below to satisfy the basic education requirement for Chemist, all grade levels.

A. Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in physical sciences, life sciences, or engineering that included 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by course work in mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours or the equivalent in physics.

OR

B combination of education and experience-course work equivalent to a major as shown in "A" above (24 semester hours or the equivalent in physical sciences, life sciences, or engineering), including at least 30 semester hours or the equivalent in chemistry, supplemented by mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours or the equivalent of physics, plus appropriate experience and/or additional education for a total of 4 years. The education or combined education and experience must be comparable in type, scope and thoroughness to that acquired through successful completion of a 4-year course of study as described in "A" above. (CLICK HEREFOR DETAILS ON HOW TO COMBINE EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE)

  • GS-09: In addition to the basic education requirement stated above, applicants must meet one of the following to qualify for the GS-09 level: Examples of such experience may include performing relatively routine and limited chemical analyses and tests and operating analytical chemistry instrumentation. This work experience would have involved following established methods and procedures, or detailed instructions; using some judgment in applying basic principles and procedures and would have required a good general working knowledge of the principles and the theories of chemistry, including analytical chemistry. Applicant must have demonstrated experience in a geochemistry laboratory using a gas chromatograph interfaced with a mass spectrometer to analyze organic compounds in geologic samples (e.g., rocks, soils, sediments, gases).
  • GS-11: one year of appropriate professional experience in chemistry that is equivalent to at least the GS-09 level in the Federal service. Examples of such experience include independent responsibility for performing established, standardized chemical tests and analyses on a broad range of samples in a laboratory setting using analytical chemistry instrumentation. Implements new testing and analytical methods. Develops and suggests minor adaptations and improvement of newly or incompletely developed procedures that govern the new testing methods. At this level, Chemists have a sound working knowledge of the principles of chemistry, including analytical chemistry, and the ability to independently perform moderately difficult and responsible scientific work. Applicant must have demonstrated experience in a geochemistry laboratory using a gas chromatograph interfaced with a mass spectrometer to analyze organic compounds in geologic samples, and have the ability to operate, maintain, troubleshoot, and/or repair analytical instrumentation.
