Duties

Help
  • You will serve as the Chief Engineer on a 90 to 109 ft, to 2,000 to 4,000 horse powered (diesel) sea-going tugboat.
  • You will be the senior technician and expert for the safe and proper operation of the tug system.
  • You will ensure all local environmental rules and regulations are followed.
  • You will read engineering and mechanical equipment drawings to determine necessary maintenance work to be performed.
  • You will determine repair procedures, installation, methods, and practices used to complete assigned projects or work orders.
  • You will maintain logs to annotate maintenance service information, condition, and location of equipment.

  • This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.
  • You will be required to complete training, obtain, and maintain a government credit card for travel and travel-related purchases.
  • This is a bargaining unit position.

Qualifications

This position has a selective placement factor that will be used to screen out ineligible candidates. The Screen-out Element for this position is: Ability to do the work of an Marine Operating Engineer Mechanic without more than normal supervision as demonstrated by: 1) Repairing diesel engines and equipment on ships and vessels; 2) Using hand tools or measuring equipment to determine the condition/serviceability of marine parts and components (e.g. micrometers, feeler gauges, dial indicators, etc.); and 3) Using blueprints to perform repairs on ship components and parts.

Additional information

This position is subject to work an uncommon tour, including nights, weekends, and holidays to meet mission requirements. Overtime or night differential pay and/or unusual duty hours may be required.

Call back overtime is a requirement of this position.

Work may be required at any Regional Locations: NBK Bremerton, NBK Bangor, NAVMAG Indian Island, or NAVSTA Everett.

A 40 hour work week is typical for this position.

A relocation incentive is generally a single payment intended to offset some of the relocation costs experienced by the selectee. A relocation incentive may be authorized.

This position is covered by the Department of Defense Priority Placement Program.

Physical Effort: The work requires long periods of standing and walking on the tugboat while underway. Must be able to climb vertical ladders and step over 3-foot bulkheads on a rocking tugboat, which requires use of legs, hands, and arms. Will be required to lift and move lines weighing up to 44 pounds, Must have peripheral vision that will enable the incumbent to avoid falls and moving objects. Must have sufficient hearing to understand verbal commands over surrounding noise of vessel and ship operations. Must be able to distinguish between basic colors and shades of color.
