The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission is seeking a highly motivated and qualified candidate for an exciting full-time permanent position as a Civil Engineer within the Division of Dam Safety & Inspections in the Office of Energy Projects. The position is located in the New York, NY Office. The candidate must be knowledgeable in the investigation, design, construction, operation, and maintenance of dams and hydroelectric power facilities, applying one or more of the following disciplines of civil engineering to the investigation, design, construction, operation, and maintenance of dams and hydroelectric power facilities: structural, hydrologic, geotechnical and/or engineering geology. Assignments may require substantial travel and can involve hiking in mountainous terrain; climbing steeply inclined faces of dams; and descending into dam galleries, penstocks, and tunnels. The mission of the Office of Energy Projects is to facilitate potential benefits to the nation through the review of natural gas and hydropower infrastructure proposals and minimize risks to the public associated with FERC jurisdictional energy infrastructure. Major duties include: 

  • Inspect, evaluate, and analyze the engineering of Commission-regulated hydroelectric projects including dams to ensure the safety of the projects.
  • Inspect, evaluate, and analyze the engineering of Commission-regulated hydroelectric projects to ensure Projects are in compliance with the terms of the license, the provisions of the Federal Power Act, and the Commission's regulations.
  • Prepare engineering reports documenting safety (dam and public) and compliance (environmental and license) of Commission-regulated hydropower projects.

Qualifications

Candidates must have one full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-13 level. Specialized Experience is defined as:  experience in applying independent hydrologic and hydraulic and engineering to the investigation, design, construction, operation, and maintenance of dams and hydroelectric power facilities.
