Duties

Help
  • You will assist senior historians or the section lead with major writing projects.
  • You will plan, research, and prepare original studies, monographs, briefings, articles, chronologies, exhibit labels and other products that furnish detailed historical background and perspective on various aspects of U.S. naval and maritime events.
  • You will prepare naval history studies that research and detail a major historical topic with additional research and treatment of related topics.
  • You will respond to naval history inquiries; support commemorative events; deliver public presentations; conduct oral histories; and edit or transcribe historical documents.
  • You will provide historical assistance and research services on an ad hoc basis to the command's leadership and staff or to outside researchers as appropriate.
  • You will stay abreast of historiographical developments in the fields of specialization and make recommendations as needed.

Applicants must meet the following positive education qualification requirement of the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualifications Standards Manual: successfully completed a full 4-year degree in history or a related field that included at least 18 semester hours in history OR possess a combination of education and experience that includes courses equivalent to a major in history, or a major in a related field that included at least 18 semester hours in history plus appropriate experience or additional education.

In addition, your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-07 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector as a professional HISTORIAN performing the following duties: 1) conducting basic research on historical topics; 2) collecting, analyzing and evaluating historical facts and determining the relative importance of historical evidence; and 3) preparing basic history studies on specific topics OR

Applicants may substitute the following education for the required experience, provided it demonstrates the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to do the work of the position: possess a master's or equivalent graduate degree, or have completed two full years of graduate level education, with a major field of study of history or a related field. OR

Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be combined to meet the total qualification requirements.

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer and part time experience. Education

QUALIFYING EDUCATION: You are eligible for this appointing authority if you are an individual who completed, within the previous two years, a qualifying associates, bachelor's, master's, professional, doctorate, vocational or technical degree or certificate from a qualifying educational institution.

If you are a veteran who was unable to apply within two years of receiving your degree due to military service obligation, you have as long as six years after degree completion to apply.

PROGRAM COMPLETION AND CONVERSION:
This vacancy is for a one year program.
Recent Graduates may be non-competitively converted to a permanent position in the competitive service (or, in some limited circumstances, to a term position lasting 1-4 years) within 120 days of successful completion of the program.

To be eligible for conversion, Recent Graduates must:
Successfully completed at least 1 year of continuous service in addition to all requirements of the program.
Meet the qualification standards for the position to which the Recent Grad will be converted.
Meet the qualification standards for the position to which the Intern will be converted
Meet agency-specific requirements as specified in the Participant's Agreement, and
Perform their job successfully

The Pathways appointment has promotion potential to the GS-11. If selected below the full performance level, incumbent may be non-competitively promoted to the next higher grade level after meeting all regulatory requirements, and upon the recommendation of management. PROGRAM ELIGIBILITY:
Applicants must be a U.S. citizen apply for a Recent Graduate position within two years of completing a qualifying educational program (i.e., within the previous two years, the recent graduate must have completed a qualifying associates, bachelors, masters, professional, doctorate, vocational or technical degree or certificate from a qualifying educational institution). An application will be considered only if it is received no later than two years from the date all requirements for a qualifying degree or certificate were met. Applicants who apply to Recent Graduate JOAs within the two year limit may be considered even if the appointment does not occur until after the two year time limit.

The two year period of eligibility will be extended for veterans who are precluded from applying due to a military service obligation. In such cases, veterans' two year period to apply for Recent Graduate positions will begin from the date of discharge or release from active duty.
