Duties

Help
  • Exercising a thorough knowledge of complex, unique (one of a kind) depot industrial plant equipment.
  • Test equipment containing electrical, mechanical, pneumatic, hydraulic, and/or electronic components, assemblies, and controls, cranes and hoists.
  • Troubleshoots, repairs, overhauls, modifies, aligns, installs, tests, and maintains a variety of complex, specialized electronically controlled and computer aided equipment .
  • Inspects, NPIs and performs duties to maintain rigging, lifting slings, straps and other load bearing devices.
  • Work from and apply multi-component work orders, blueprints, specifications and schematics as required in performing the disassembly, mechanical repair, rebuild and maintenance including integrated components.
  • Use hand, power tools and specialized tools common to the trade for installing, maintaining and repairing industrial production/non-production machinery.
  • Makes technical inspections, performs preventive maintenance and makes various troubleshooting and repairs to complex industrial equipment.

  • This is a Testing Designated Position (TDP) and is subject to initial/entry testing and random drug testing.
  • This position require the incumbent obtain and maintain a fork lift License.
  • This position require the incumbent obtain and maintain a crane inspection certification.
  • This position require the incumbent obtain and maintain a rigging inspection certification.
  • This position requires heavy lifting of up to 45 lbs.
  • This position requires the completion of a pre-employment and annual Physical Examination.

Qualifications

This position is a TERM position, Not-To-Exceed one (1) year and one (1) day.Position is temporary and may be extended up to a maximum of eight (8) years. This position may be converted to permanent career or career-conditional appointment without further competition as long as all requirements are met. To be eligible for conversion, employee must complete at least 2 years of current continuous service under a term appointment in the competitive service. Employee must have a current performance rating at least fully successful or equivalent.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Instrument Mechanic~ without more than normal supervision. Performing common instrument mechanic duties; troubleshooting, repairing, testing, and maintaining a variety of electronically controlled and computer aided equipment and test equipment containing electrical, mechanical, pneumatic, hydraulic, and/or electronic components, assemblies, and controls, cranes and hoists. I work under normal supervision of a work leader or journey-level employee who observes tasks in progress and upon completion to make sure they are properly performed - Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

  • Ability To Do The Work Of The Position Without More Than Normal Supervision
  • PHYSICAL EFFORT: Work requires frequent handling of items weighing up to 45 pounds and some lifting of items in excess of 45 pounds. Incumbent is required to push, pull, reach, walk, stand, crawl, kneel, squat, and climb for sustained periods of time while performing work. Work on cranes requires incumbent to work 20 to 70 feet above floor level. Incumbent may also be required to work in confined spaces and in awkward positions.
  • WORKING CONDITIONS: Work is performed inside shops and outside with exposure to weather conditions. Buildings have concrete floors and there is noise from running machinery and equipment. There is exposure to noise, grease and dirt, moving objects, and sharp edges of equipment. There is possibility of cuts, scrapes, bruises, strains, burns, and electrical shock. Danger from high speed operating equipment in engine and transmission test cells and other complex test stand power units. Incumbent wears required personal protective equipment such as safety glasses, shoes, hearing protection, gloves, and half/full face respirators.
